Jallianwala Bagh Massacre Day

  • Jallianwala Bagh is a public garden in Amritsar city in Punjab province of India.
  • It has a memorial to remember those people who were killed in the Massacre of 13 April, 1919.
  • This date was also the Punjabi New Year 2,000 peaceful demonstrators had gathered in the garden.
  • The memorial is managed by Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Trust, which was established as per Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Act passed by Government of India in year 1951.

Colonel Reginald Edward Harry Dyer CB

  • Colonel Reginald Edward Harry Dyer CB (9 October 1864 – 23 July 1927) was an officer of the British Indian Army who, as a temporary brigadier general, was responsible for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar (in the province of Punjab).
  • Colonial British Raj sources identified 379 fatalities and estimated about 1100 wounded.
  • Civil Surgeon Dr. Smith indicated that there were 1,526 casualties.

  • He was a well-known poet, lyricist.
  • He was the most popular lyricist in 1950’s before Kannadasan fame.
  • He penned some of the wonderful philosophy-tinged, upbeat lyrics to MGR’s successful movies.
  • Within the years 1954–1959 he became active in the film industry of southern India and penned around 250 songs.

Death:

  • He died on October 8, 1959.
