World Lung Cancer Day

World Cancer Day is observed on August 1, 2019. Lung cancer continues to be one of the most common cancers worldwide, claiming more lives yearly than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined. It is estimated that lung cancer accounts for nearly one in five cancer deaths globally.

Birth anniversary of freedom fighter Pingali Venkayya

Pingali Venkayya, a freedom fighter and the designer of the flag on which the Indian national flag was based was born on August 02 in 1876, near Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Today is his 143rd birth anniversary.  Venkayya’s design for the National Flag was finally approved by Mahatma Gandhi in a Congress meeting in Vijayawada in 1921.

World Breastfeeding Week The Food and Nutrition Board, Ministry of Women and Child Development, is organizing a number of activities on the theme “Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding” during the World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) being observed from 1st to 7th August 2019. The focus this year is on protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding.
August 06 Hiroshima Day Hiroshima Day commemorates 6 August 1945, the day when an atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Hiroshima Marks 74 th anniversary of atomic bombing this year. The mayor of Hiroshima urged Japan to sign a landmark UN treaty banning nuclear weapons as the city  marked 74 years since being targeted in the world’s first atomic attack..
August 07 5th National Handloom Day The National Handloom Day is observed annually on 7th August to honour the handloom weavers in the country and also highlight India’s handloom industry. National Handloom Day seeks to focus on the contribution of handloom to the socio economic development of the country and also increase the income of weavers.
August 08 77th anniversary of Quit India movement The 77th anniversary of the August Kranti Din, which is considered as one of the important milestones in the history of freedom struggle of our country, is observed on August 08.

On this date in 1942, Mahatma Gandhi gave a call to end the British rule and launched the Quit India Movement at the session of the All-India Congress Committee in Mumbai.

August 09 International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

9 August commemorates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. It is celebrated around the world and marks the date of the inaugural session of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations at the United Nations in 1982.

Nagasaki Day

On this day in 1945, a second atom bomb is dropped on Japan by the United States, at Nagasaki, resulting finally in Japan’s unconditional surrender. The bomb was nicknamed ‘Fat Man’ in reference to Winston Churchill  ‘Fat Man’ killed 80,000 people on 9th August, 1945.

World Biofuel Day World Biofuel Day is observed every year on 10th of August to create awareness about the importance of non-fossil fuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels and highlight the various efforts made by Government in the biofuel sector.

Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas organized World Biofuel Day on 10th August 2019 at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

August 12 International Youth Day 12 August was first designated International Youth Day by the UN General Assembly in 1999, and serves as an annual celebration of the role of young women and men as essential partners in change, and an opportunity to raise awareness of challenges and problems facing the world’s youth.

August 12 World Elephant Day World Elephant Day is being observed on August 12. On August 12, 2012, the World Elephant Day was launched to bring attention to the urgent plight of Asian and African elephants.
August 13 International Lefthanders Day International Left Handers Day is observed annually on August 13 to celebrate the uniqueness and differences of the left handers. The day was first observed in the year 1976 by Dean R. Campbell, founder of the Lefthanders International.
August 14 Pakistan Independence Day Youm-e-Azadi or Pakistan Independence Day is observed annually on 14 August. On this day Pakistan achieved Independence and was declared a sovereign nation following the end of British rule in 1947.
August 15 73rd Independence Day Independence Day is annually celebrated on 15 August, commemorating the nation’s independence from the United Kingdom on 15 August 1947. The UK Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act 1947 and transferred legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly.
August 17 Indonesian Independence Day Indonesian Independence Day is celebrated on 17 August every year. This day is celebrated as the declaration of independence from Dutch colonization in 1945. It is also referred to as Hari Merdeka.
August 19 World Photography Day World Photography Day is an annual, worldwide celebration of the art, craft, science and history of photography. This day aims to inspire photographers across the planet to share a single photo with a simple purpose: to share their world with the world.
August 19 World Humanitarian Day World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is held every year on 19 August to pay tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service, and to rally support for people affected by crises around the world.
August 20 World Mosquito Day World mosquito day is celebrated annually on August 20. It is a commemoration of a British doctor, Sir Ronald Ross’s discovery in 1897 that ‘female mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans’. The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine organizes world mosquito day celebrations every year, since the 1930s.
August 20 Former PM Rajiv Gandhi  75th birth anniversary The nation is paying homage to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 75th birth anniversary. Rajiv Gandhi served as Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989. This day is also observed as Sadbhavna Diwas to promote national integration and communal harmony among people of all religion and languages.
August 21 International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism The second commemoration of  the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to Victims of Terrorism will focus on the resilience of victims and their families.To observe the International Day, the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and the Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism will launch a photographic exhibition on August 21 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
August 22 International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief The General Assembly adopted the resolution A/RES/73/296, and designated August 22 as “The International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief” strongly condemning continuing violence and acts of terrorism targeting individuals, including persons belonging to religious minorities, on the basis of or in the name of religion or belief.
August 23 International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition was designated by UNESCO to memorialize the transatlantic slave trade. International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition was first celebrated in particular in Haiti and Goree in Senegal.
August 24 International Strange Music Day International Strange Music Day is celebrated on was 24th August. It was created by Patrick Grant, a New York City musician. This day is to get people to play and listen to types of music they have never experienced before.
August 26                              Women’s Equality Day

Women’s Equality Day commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which granted the women right to vote. In 1878 the amendment was first time introduced and in 1971, the U.S. Congress designated 26 August as Women’s Equality Day.

International Day Against Nuclear Tests On 2 December 2009, the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 August the International Day against Nuclear Tests by unanimously adopting resolution 64/35. The resolution calls for increasing awareness and education “about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.”
August 30 International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances The United Nations (UN) observes the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances on August 30 each year. In December 2010, the UN officially declared that it would annually observe the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances on August 30 each year, starting from 2011.
August 31 Malaysia’s Independence Day Malaysia’s Independence Day is celebrated on 31 August. The day commemorates the independence of the Federation of  Malaya from British colonial rule in 1957. Malaysia was formed in 1963 when the former British colony of Singapore and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, joined the Federation of Malaya.
