October 20 – World Statistics Day

  • The UN General Assembly decided with resolution 69/282 to celebrate the day every five years. The first World Statistics Day was celebrated in 2010. Last this day was celebrated in 2015. The next World Statistics Day will be celebrated on 20 October 2020.
  • Theme of the year 2015: Better Data, Better Lives

Col. Chewang Rinchen Setu in Ladakh

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will attend the inaugural ceremony of Col. Chewang Rinchen Setu which has been constructed at an altitude of 14,650 feet in the forward area of Ladakh region. This bridge has been built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
  • It is named in honor of Colonel Chewang Rinchan who was one of the highly decorated officer in the Indian Army from Ladakh and he was awarded the Maha Vir Chakara twice.

TRIPURA

Tripura CM inaugurates daily Air-Asia flights to various cities

  • Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb inaugurated daily Air-Asia flights from Agartala to Imphal (Manipur), Guwahati (Assam), Delhi and Kolkata (West Bengal) at Maharaj Bir Bikram Airport, Agartala.

40 cyber police stations, six cyber labs in Tamil Nadu soon

  • The State will soon have 40 cyber crime police stations and six cyber labs to tackle the increasing number of crimes.
  • Six Labs will come up one each in Chennai,Coimbatore,Madurai,Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram and Vellore.

INTERNATIONAL

Sri Lanka removed from FATF’s Grey List

  • Sri Lanka has been removed from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) list of countries at risk for money laundering.
  • Paris informed the removal of Sri Lanka’s name from the blacklist commending the new measures taken by the country on financial security. Sri Lanka was first included in the blacklist in 2011. By 2012, Sri Lanka was listed in the list as a dangerous country with no commitment to the financial security plan

Chile President declares state emergency in Santiago

  • Chile’s President Sebastian Pinera has declared a state of emergency in Santiago and gave the military responsibility for security after a day of violent protests over an increase in the price of metro tickets.
  • The President has appointed Major General Javier Iturriaga del Campo as the head of national defence. In a statement, he said the objective of the state of emergency is to ensure public order and peace for the inhabitants of Santiago.

Prahlad Singh Patel to inaugurate CCRT e-portal and YouTube Channel

  • Union Minister of state for Culture and Tourism Prahlad Singh Patel inaugurated e-portal of Centre for Cultural Resources and Training and YouTube Channel in New Delhi with an aim to take India to a newer digital pinnacle and to promote Indian culture.
  • In order to explore & understand the unknown aspects of India’s lesser known places and their rural and semi-urban culture, CCRT has started publishing books from the series “Untold Tales of India’s Cities”.

BOOKS & AUTHORS

Book “Bridgital Nation”

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi unveiled the book “Bridgital Nation” and presented its first copy to Shri Ratan Tata in an event organized at New Delhi. The book has been written by Shri N Chandrasekaran and Ms. Roopa Purushottam.
  • The book presents a powerful vision of the future where technology and human beings co-exist in a mutually beneficial ecosystem.

AWARDS

‘Most Eminent Senior Citizen Award’

  • The Vice President of India, Shri M Venkaiah Naidu presented ‘Most Eminent Senior Citizen Award’ to legal luminary, scholar and former Attorney General of India, Shri K. Parasaran at a function at the India International Centre in New Delhi.
  • Shri Parasaran was honored with the Award on the occasion of the Elder’s Day celebration of Age Care India, an organization working for the welfare of the elderly.

Egypt International mixed doubles title

  • In badminton, Kuhoo Garg and Dhruv Rawat put up a brilliant effort to win the mixed doubles title at the Egypt International 2019 in Cairo. The Garg and Rawat held their victory over the third seeds Utkarsh Arora and Karishma Wadkar in an all-Indian final.

7th CISM World Military Games

  • In Boxing, World Championships silver medallist Amit Panghal won his opening bout in the men’s flyweight (52kg) category as the boxers gave India a good start in the 7th CISM World Military Games in Wuhan, China.
