October 17 – International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

  • The observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty can be traced back to 17 October 1987. On that day, over a hundred thousand people gathered at the Trocadéro in Paris , where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948, to honour the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger.
  • Theme: “Acting together to empower children, their families and communities to end poverty”

 NATIONAL AFFAIRS

48th edition of the Indian Handicrafts and Gifts Fair (IHGF)

  • Textiles Secretary, Ravi Capoor, inaugurated the 48th edition of the Indian Handicrafts and Gifts Fair (IHGF) at the India Expo Centre & Mart at Greater Noida. The IHGF-Delhi Fair 2019 will have knowledge seminars on various topics by expert faculties.
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is the Theme of IHGF-Delhi Fair.

Van Dhan Internship Programme of TRIFED

  • Shri Arjun Munda, Union Minister of Tribal Affairs launched the “Van Dhan Internship Programme” organised by TRIFED under Ministry of Tribal Affairs in New Delhi.
  • 18 interns (to be called Minister’s interns) from some of the reputed Institutes of Rural Management/ Management Institutions/ Institutes of Social Work/ Social Services of the country are participating in the “Van Dhan Internship Programme”. These interns will help the tribal population in becoming self reliant and entrepreneurs.

20th Livestock Census

  • Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has released the 20th Livestock Census report.
  • The Census will prove beneficial not just for policy makers but also for agriculturists, traders, entrepreneurs, dairying industry and masses in general.
  • The total Livestock population is 535.78 million in the country showing an increase of 4.6% over Livestock Census-2012. Total Bovine population (Cattle, Buffalo, Mithun and Yak) is 302.79 Million in 2019 which shows an increase of about 1% over the previous census.

MANIPUR

Shirui Lily Festival inaugurated in Manipur

  • Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Tourism and Culture Prahlad Singh Patel yesterday inaugurated Shirui Lily Festival, 2019 at Shirui Vangayan Ground of Ukhrul in Manipur.
  • Mr Patel along with State Chief Minister N. Biren Singh inaugurated the Strength of Unity Statue as a mark of opening the third edition of the four-day state festival.

 UTTAR PRADESH

Training & performance programme of KHON Ramlila

  • The Culture Department of Uttar Pradesh government is going to organise the country’s first training and performance programme of world famous KHON (खोन) Ramlila, a masked form of Ramlila art of Thailand in collaboration with Thai government.
  • KHON Ramlila of Thailand is included in the list of UNESCO’s Intangible cultural heritage and it’s a form of masked dance depicting the scenes of Ramlila.

SUMMITS & CONFERENCES

Two-day stakeholders’ meet between India and Bangladesh

  • The Assam government will be hosting a two-day stakeholders’ meeting between India and Bangladesh from 22nd of this month in Guwahati.
  • A 70-member delegation from Bangladesh, including two Central ministers and two advisors of the Prime Minister, will be participating in the meet. A similar top-level team from India, including Union ministers, will represent the host nation.

SCHEMES

GOAL (Going Online as Leaders)

  • Shri Arjun Munda, Union Minister of Tribal Affair announced the second phase of GOAL (Going Online as Leaders), a Facebook program aimed at inspiring, guiding and encouraging tribal girls from across India to become village-level digital young leaders for their communities.
  • Launched earlier this year in March, GOAL connects underprivileged young tribal women with senior expert mentors in the areas of business, fashion and arts to learn digital and life skills.
  • In the second phase of the program, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Facebook together will digitally mentor 5000 young women in India’s tribal dominated districts.

Food Safety Mitra (FSM) scheme

  • Dr Harsh Vardhan launched Food Safety Mitra (FSM) scheme for strengthening and scaling up ‘Eat Right India’ movement.
  • The ‘Food Safety Mitra (FSM)’ scheme will support small and medium scale food businesses to comply with the food safety laws and facilitate licensing and registration, hygiene ratings and training. Apart from strengthening food safety, this scheme would also create new employment opportunities for youth, particularly with food and nutrition background.

APPOINTMENTS

New Controller General of Accounts

  • Shri J.P.S. Chawla assumed charge as the new Controller General of Accounts, Ministry of Finance, Department of Expenditure.
  • Government of India has appointed Shri J. P. S. Chawla, 1985-batch Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) Officer as the new Controller General of Accounts (CGA), Ministry of Finance, Department of Expenditure with effect from October 15, 2019 on regular basis.

Hindi Pakhwada Awards 2019

  • Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Shri Ram Vilas Paswan distributed the Hindi Pakhwada Awards, 2019 to the officials and employees of the Department of Consumer Affairs in Krishi Bhawan.
  • Shri Paswan also released a compilation of poems in Hindi with the theme ‘Betiyaan’ written by Shri Yashpal Sharma who is a Joint Director for Official Language in the Department of Consumer Affairs.
