October 15 – International Day of Rural Women

  • The first International Day of Rural Women was observed on 15 October 2008. This new international day, established by the General Assembly in its resolution 62/136 of 18 December 2007, recognizes “the critical role and contribution of rural women, including indigenous women, in enhancing agricultural and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty.”

Nation pays homage to former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on his birth anniversary

  • The nation pays homage to former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on his birth anniversary on October 15. Every year, former president APJ Abdul Kalam’s birthday is celebrated as World Students’ Day.
  • He was India’s 11th President, who served from 2002 to 2007, and was widely referred to as the people’s President besides being credited for India’s civilian space programme and military missile systems.

Training of 1st Batch of National Trainers for Census of India 2021 commences

  • The first batch of the trainings of National Trainers for Census of India 2021 commenced today at National Statistical System Training Academy (NSSTA), Greater Noida, with Additional RGI, Shri Sanjay inaugurating the interactive training session.
  • This training would take place from 14th October 2019 to 25th October 2019. Registrar general and Census Commissioner of India, Shri Vivek Joshi would address and interact with the participants during the training.

60th ‘World Standard Day’ by Bureau of Indian Standards

  • Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Shri Ram Vilas Paswan inaugurated the celebrations of ‘World Standard Day’ by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on the theme “Video Standards create a global stage” in New Delhi.
  • The theme is highly relevant in the Indian context as India is the fastest growing entertainment and media market globally and is expected to keep up the momentum by growing at a compounded annual growth rate of more than 11%. W

India and Netherlands launched the second phase of the LOTUS-HR

  • The second phase of Local Treatment of Urban Sewage Streams for Healthy Reuse, LOTUS-HR was launched at the Barapullah drain in New Delhi by Union Minister Harsh Vardhan and the visiting Dutch Royal couple this afternoon.
  • LOTUS-HR is a water laboratory which is jointly supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology and Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research.
  • The project aims to demonstrate a holistic waste-water management approach that will produce clean water which can be reused for various purposes.

  • Russian frigate Admiral Makarov test-fired Kalibr cruise missiles as part of drills in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. All the armament of the ship has been checked in combat within the last two years.

DPIIT launches website and mobile app for IPR

  • Secretary Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Guruprasad Mohapatra launched the website and mobile application [Learn to Protect, Secure and Maximize Your Innovation] on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in New Delhi.
  • The website and app has been developed by Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM)-DPIIT in collaboration with Qualcomm and National Law University (NLU), Delhi.

BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Bangladesh becomes 2nd fastest growing economy in South Asia: World Bank

  • Bangladesh has become the second-fastest growing economy in South Asia after Bhutan. World Bank in its report ‘South Asia Economic Focus, Making (De) Centralization Work’ says that GDP growth rate of the country is projected to moderate to 7.2 per cent this fiscal year and 7.3 per cent in 2020 in Bangladesh.

First Training Squadron at DAR ES SALAAM and ZANZIBAR, Tanzania

  • As part of Indian Navy’s Overseas Deployment, four indigenously built ships of Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron, Indian Naval Ships Tir, Sujata and Shardul and Indian Coast Guard Ship Sarathi, are visiting Tanzania from 14 to 17 Oct 19. During the visit the 1TS ships would be undertaking port calls at Dar Es Salaam on 14 Oct 19 and Zanzibar from 15 to 17 Oct 19.

2019 Nobel Prize for Economics

  • The 2019 Nobel Prize for Economics has been jointly won by Indian-American Abhijit Banerjee, his wife, Esther Duflo, and Michael Kremer of the United States for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.
  • 58-year-old Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee was educated at the University of Calcutta, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Harvard University, where he received his PhD in 1988.
  • He is currently the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2003 he founded the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), along with Esther Duflo and Sendhil Mullainathan, and he remains one of the lab’s directors.

Margaret Atwood and Bernardine Evaristo jointly win Booker Prize

  • Margaret Atwood and Bernardine Evaristo have jointly won the 2019 Booker Prize after judges flout the rules by declaring a tie.
  • The Booker rules say the prize must not be divided, but the judges insisted they could not separate Atwood’s – ‘The Testament’ and ‘Girl, Woman, Other’ by Evaristo, who is the first black woman to win the prestigious award since its creation in 1969.

Simone Biles breaks record for most world medals won by any gymnast

  • Simone Biles broke the all-time record for most medals by any gymnast at the world championships by winning the balance beam competition at the World Gymnastics Championship in Stuttgart, Germany.
  • It’s the 24th world championship medal for Biles, breaking a tie on 23 with the Belarusian men’s gymnast Vitaly Scherbo.
