October 13 – International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

  • The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction was started in 1989, after a call by the United Nations General Assembly for a day to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction. Held every 13 October, the day celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risks that they face.
  • 2019 Theme: Reduce disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services

MADHYA PRADESH

10th National Cultural Festival to be held in MP till oct 21

  • In Madhya Pradesh, the 10th edition of the Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav-National Cultural Festival is being organized by the Union Ministry of Culture from today to 21st of October under the ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ campaign.
  • The National Cultural festival will display diverse forms of folk, art and culture of 22 states. The concept of National Cultural Festival was conceived in the year 2015. So far, the Ministry of Culture has organized nine such Festivals.

JAMMU & KASHMIR

J&K government to soon start telemedicine services in Srinagar

  • Jammu and Kashmir government will soon start telemedicine services in Srinagar to improve medical facilities in the state capital.
  • Under the proposed service, all medical institutions in Srinagar district will be connected with each other through satellite-based networking channels. In a statement, state government said, consultations with concerned agencies to introduce telemedicine services are currently underway.

7-day mega multimedia exhibition in Guwahati

  • Governor of Assam, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, will inaugurate a seven-day mega multimedia exhibition in Guwahati on 14th October, as part of 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • The exhibition will showcase the life, philosophy and ideals of Gandhiji through modern technology. It will also depict some of the objects of Mahatma Gandhi along with some rare pictures of his visit to various places in Assam.

Chinese President Xi pledges NRs 56 billion in aid to Nepal

  • Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that China will provide Nepalese 56 billion rupees assistance to Kathmandu over the next two years to help Nepal’s development programmes as the two countries inked 20 agreements to bolster their bilateral ties.

Indian nun Mariam Thresia, four others declared Saints

  • Indian nun Mariam Thresia and four others were declared Saints by Pope Francis at a grand ceremony at the Vatican City.
  • Mariam Thresia, who founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family in Thrissur in May 1914, was raised to the highest position within the centuries-old institution during the ceremony at the St Peter’s Square.

India offers help in rescue operation for Typhoon hit Japan

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives in Japan due to Typhoon Hagibis and said Indian Navy personnel, who were on a scheduled visit there, will be happy to assist in rescue operations.
  • Typhoon Hagibis made landfall in the South of Tokyo and moved towards North, triggering severe floods. It has left at least 33 people dead and more than a dozen missing.

  • Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises inaugurated a conference on One Nation One FASTag in New Delhi. The conference saw the signing of MoUs with state departments / other agencies for bringing in a unified electronic tolling solution across the country.

BRICS Culture Ministers’ Meet

  • Union Minister of State for Culture and Tourism (Independent charge) Shri Prahlad Singh Patel participated in BRICS Culture Ministers’ meeting held in Curitiba, Brazil.
  • One such event namely joint exhibition titled Bonding Regions & Imagining Cultural Synergies is being hosted by National Gallery of Modern Arts of India under the auspices of the BRICS Alliance of Museums and Art Galleries during November-December, 2019

India, Sierra Leone signed six agreements

  • India and Sierra Leone signed six agreements including extending a credit line of 30 million US Dollars for rice cultivation. Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio committed to further strengthening bilateral relations.

India, ADB signed 190 million dollar loan agreement for improving road connectivity in Rajasthan

  • India and Asian Development Bank, ADB have signed 190 million dollar loan agreement for improving road connectivity in Rajasthan. For the benefit of commuters and pedestrians, particularly women and children, the project provides for constructing more than 200 bus stops and 2 kilometer of raised sidewalk on project roads.

MC Mary Kom settles for bronze in World Women’s Boxing Championships

  • Six-time champion M C Mary Kom settled for a bronze medal in the World Women’s Boxing Championships after losing to Turkey’s Busenaz Cakiroglu in an intense semifinal bout at Ulan Ude in Russia.

Lakshya Sen wins maiden BWF World Tour title

  • Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen clinched his maiden BWF World Tour title by winning the Dutch Open men’s singles at Almere in the Netherlands. He had also won the Asian Junior Championships, a silver at Youth Olympic Games and a bronze medal at World Junior Championships last year.

Manju Rani settles for silver medal in World Women’s Boxing C’ships

  • Sixth-seeded Manju Rani settled for silver medal in World Women’s Boxing Championships at Ulan-Ude in Russia. Second-seeded Russian Ekaterina Paltceva defeated Rani 4 -1 in 48 kilogram category in the final match of the tournament.
