  • On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (by resolution 45/106) designated 1 October the International Day of Older Persons. October 01 – World Vegetarian Day

  • World Vegetarian Day is celebrated annually on October 1. The day brings global attention to the health and environmental benefits of vegetarianism and focuses on the ethics of following a vegetarian lifestyle.
  • World Vegetarian Day was founded in 1977 by the North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS) and was endorsed by the International Vegetarian Union in 1978.

Assam to launch ‘Plants for Plastic’ campaign

  • In Assam, in order to gradually collect and remove the harmful plastics from the eco- system Bongaigaon District administration is going to launch a campaign ‘Plants for Plastic’.
  • The campaign aims to encourage people to collect and remove plastic from their houses, commercial establishments and educational institutions. Under this unique initiative, any person can deposit one kilogram plastic in the Municipality office and get a valuable sapling for free.

Typhoon ‘Mitag’

  • Fast-moving Typhoon ‘Mitag’ is bearing down on northern Taiwan, where it is expected to bring high winds and heavy rain. Warnings have been issued for parts of the island’s east and north, including the capital, Taipei, with the worst of the weather expected to arrive.

  • Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh launched the website of 11th edition of DefEXpo, to be held in Lucknow from 05 – 08 February, 2020,. The website, www.defexpo.gov.in, provides online services to exhibitors, besides hosting informative content about the product profile of DPSUs and Ordnance Factories.

MNRE to organise Global Student Solar Assembly

  • To commemorate 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and to promote the Gandhian idea of sustainable living, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in association with IIT Bombay, is organizing the Global Student Solar Assembly on 2nd October 2019.
  • This Workshop aims at sensitizing young minds about energy sustainability and environmental care.

Week-Long IPCC Meet on Climate Change begins in New Delhi

  • India is hosting the Second Lead Author Meeting of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group III Sixth Assessment Report at New Delhi, beginning 30th September to 4th October 2019.
  • The Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) will examine topics such as the link between consumption and behaviour and greenhouse gas emissions, and the role of innovation and technology.

DEFENCE

Indo-Thailand Joint Military Exercise Maitree – 2019

  • Exercise MAITREE-2019, the joint military training exercise between Indian Army (IA) & Royal Thailand Army (RTA) which commenced on 16 Sep 19, culminated on 29 Sep 2019 at Foreign Training Node, Umroi (Meghalaya).
  • During the last 14 days, contingents of both armies shared their expertise and experiences in counter terrorism operations and enhanced interoperability. The scope of the exercise encompassed joint training in various facets of counter terrorism operations in urban and jungle environments.

BRAHMOS Supersonic Cruise Missile successfully test-fired

  • BRAHMOS supersonic cruise missile featuring Indian propulsion system, airframe, power supply and other major indigenous components, was successfully test fired at 10.20 AM today from ITR, Chandipur in Odisha.
  • The missile was successfully test-fired for its full range of 290-km during the launch jointly conducted by DRDO and BrahMos Aerospace.

NITI Aayog releases School Education Quality Index (SEQI)

  • School Education Quality Index (SEQI) was developed by NITI Aayog to evaluate the performance of States and Union Territories (UTs) in the school education sector. The index aims to bring an ‘outcomes’ focus to education policy by providing States and UTs with a platform to identify their strengths and weaknesses and undertake requisite course corrections or policy interventions.
  • Kerala, Manipur and Chandigarh top in overall performance. Haryana, Meghalaya, Daman & Diu show most improvement in the first edition of index.

Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria takes over as the 26th Chief of the Air Staff

  • Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria took over as the 26th Chief of the Air Staff at a ceremony held at Air Headquarters (Vayu Bhawan).
  • In recognition of his meritorious service the Air Chief Marshal has been awarded the Vayu Sena Medal(VM) in 2002, Ati Vishist Seva Medal(AVSM) in 2013 and Param Vishist Seva Medal(PVSM) in 2018.

RBI appoints Jai Bhagwan Bhoria as administrator for PMC Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India has superseded the Board of Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank Limited, Mumbai and appointed Jai Bhagwan Bhoria as the bank’s administrator with all powers of the board.

10th Asian Age Group Championships

  • In Swimming, India’s N Wilson Singh and Satish Kumar Prajapati produced impressive performances to win a gold medal in 10 metres platform synchronised event at the ongoing 10th Asian Age Group Championships in Bengaluru.

Sumit Nagal wins men’s singles title ATP Challenger Tournament

  • In Tennis, Sumit Nagal has won the men’s singles title of ATP Challenger Tournament at Buenos Aires in Argentina. He defeated local favourite Facundo Bognis.
