May 4 – International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD)

  • International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is observed on May 4. It was instituted after a proposal was emailed out across the world on January 4, 1999 due to the deaths of five firefighters in tragic circumstances in a wildfire at Linton in Victoria, Australia.

Kohinoor’s Consumer Electronics Show 2019

  • Fast-growing electronics retail chain Kohinoor announces the third edition and India’s biggest electronics festival Consumer Electronics Show 2019, in partnership with the Mumbai International Consumer Fair.

Odisha:

Cyclone Fani

  • The Cyclonic storm Fani hits Odisha severly. The speed of the wind may be 170- to 180 km per hour. Cyclone Fani pronounced as Foni name was suggested by Bangladesh. It means ‘Snake’ or ‘hood of snake’.

Kerala:

Film workshop for kids

  • The Navyug Children’s Theatre and Movie Village, in association with the Kerala Children’s Film Society, is organising a five-day film workshop for children at the Thanmaya Media Centre.

Appointments:

New Member of Finance Commission’s Advisory Council.

  • The Chief Economic Advisor, Government of India, Dr. Krishnamurthy Subramanian had been included as Member of the Advisory Council of the Fifteenth Finance Commission. He will be the twelfth Member of the Council.

Space Affairs:

SpaceX to send organs on a chip to the International Space Station

  • SpaceX is reportedly set to send microchips embedded with living human cells or so-called organs on a chip to help understand how space travel affects humans.
  • The set of tissue chips modelling kidneys, bone and cartilage, blood-brain barrier, and lungs is scheduled to arrive at the International Space Station (ISS) in the next few days.

International Affairs:

Nepal to start construction of railways linking Kathmandu with India, China

  • Nepal is planning to start construction of railways linking Kathmandu with India and China through the Detailed Project Reports of Birgunj-Kathmandu and Rasuwagadhi-Kathmandu railways, which connecting Kathmandu to both India and China by railways, will be prepared and construction works will be started within two years.

Sports Affairs:

Bajrang Punia bags gold in Ali Aliyev wrestling tournament

  • World No. 1 Bajrang Punia bagged gold after defeating Viktor Rassadin in the finals of men’s 65kg freestyle in the Ali Aliyev wrestling tournament in Kaspiisk, Russia. He become the first Indian to win gold at Ali Aliyev wrestling tournament.

New Zealand Open badminton tournament

  • H S Prannoy loses to fifth seed Kanta Tsuneyama of Japan in the men’s singles quarterfinal, drawing curtains on India’s campaign at the New Zealand Open badminton tournament, in Auckland.
