May 31 – World No Tobacco Day
  • Every year, on 31 May, the World Health Organization (WHO) and global partners celebrate World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). The annual campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness on the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure, and to discourage the use of tobacco in any form.
  • The focus of World No Tobacco Day 2019 is on “tobacco and lung health.”

Enhanced social security pensions from June
  • The State government has announced its resolve to implement the enhanced Aasara pensions, social welfare pensions, for different categories of people with effect from June. The eligible beneficiaries will receive enhanced pensions from the month of July. There are over 39 lakh eligible beneficiaries covered under different categories of pensions at present.

Action plan formulated to reduce infant mortality rate in J&K
  • The Jammu and Kashmir Government has formulated a comprehensive action plan to reduce the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) to a single digit by the year 2020 in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.

6 Indian-origin students among 8 win US National Spelling Bee Competition
  • Six Indian-origin students are among the eight participants who won the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee, taking home more than USD 50,000 in cash and prizes, after defeating over 550 other contestants in an unprecedented competition in the US.
  • Rishik Gandhasri, Saketh Sundar, Shruthika Padhy, Sohum Sukhatankar, Abhijay Kodali, 12, Rohan Raja.
UN extends sanctions against South Sudan
  • The UN Security Council has extended an arms embargo and sanctions on South Sudan for a year. The measure renews until May 31, 2020, an arms embargo on South Sudan along with an assets freeze and global travel ban slapped on eight South Sudanese nationals for their role in fuelling the war.

‘Forbidden’ planet discovered in Neptunian Desert
  • Astronomers said they have discovered a rogue exoplanet with its own atmosphere in the Neptunian Desert. NGTS-4b, nick-named ‘The Forbidden Planet’ is smaller than Neptune but three times the size of Earth, said researchers led by the University of Warwick in the UK.

FICCI survey forecasts India’s GDP growth at 7.1% for FY20
  • The country’s median GDP is forecast at 7.1 per cent for FY20 and 7.2 per cent for FY 21.The industry body FICCI’s economic outlook survey said that the minimum and maximum growth estimate stood at 6.8 per cent and 7.3 per cent, for 2019-20.

BIMSTEC leaders hold bilateral meetings with Indian PM
  • In the first of a series of bilateral meetings with foreign leaders lined up, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a warm meeting with President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena, at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.
  • Mr Modi will also hold bilateral meetings with Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli, and Bhutan Prime Minister Lotay Tshering and Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Kumar Jugnauth.

Indian-origin Anita Bhatia appointed UN Deputy Executive Director
  • Anita Bhatia has been appointed the Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women) for Resource Management, Sustainability and Partnerships.
  • Indian-origin Anita Bhatia, a veteran in strategic partnerships, resource mobilisation and management, has been appointed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as the Deputy Executive Director in the global body’s agency focussed on women empowerment and gender equality.
 Admiral Karambir Singh takes over as Navy Chief
  • Admiral Karambir Singh took over as the Chief of Naval Staff. With a career spanning over 37 years, Karambir Singh served as the Vice Chief of Naval Staff at the headquarters in New Delhi before moving to Vishakhapatnam last year as the Eastern Naval Commander.
Vice-Admiral Atul Kumar Jain takes over as chief of ENC
  • Vice-Admiral Atul Kumar Jain took over as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C), Eastern Naval Command (ENC), from Vice-Admiral Karambir Singh.

Awards

WHO award for Rajasthan Health Dept.
  • The World Health Organization has selected the Rajasthan government’s Medical & Health Department for its award this year in recognition of its achievements in the field of tobacco control. The Health Department of the State is the only government body in the country which will be awarded for its tobacco-free initiatives.

Sports Affairs

Shooting World Cup
  • In Shooting, India produced their best ever show at the ISSF World Cup with a total tally of five gold medals in Munich, Germany. By capturing five of the 10 gold medals,Indian shooting was able to assert its class and firepower. China did win nine medals, but had only two gold.
