May 11 – World Migratory Bird Day 2019

  • World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is an annual awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats. The international celebrations for World Migratory Bird Day will be held on every second Saturday in May and in October. 2019 Theme Protect Birds: Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution

National Affairs:

PepsiCo withdraws all cases against potato farmers

  • PepsiCo has withdrawn all its cases against nine Gujarat farmers who grew its protected potato variety used to make Lays chips, including cases seeking damages of Rs.1.05 crore each from small farmers.

AAI moves to take over Jet office space

  • Airports Authority of India (AAI) started the process of taking over offices of Jet Airways at various airports, along with cancelling Airport Entry Passes of employees.

Supreme Court extends Ayodhya mediation

  • A five-judge Bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi gave the Supreme Court-appointed mediation committee time till August 15 to continue with its efforts to resolve the prolonged and strife-ridden Ayodhya title dispute.

Karnataka:

Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka sworn in as Chief Justice of Karnataka HC

  • Justice Oka took over the helm of the Karnataka High Court from Acting Chief Justice Lingappa Narayana Swamy. Justice Swamy had been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice in January this year after erstwhile Chief Justice, Dinesh Maheshwari was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court.

WTO Ministerial Meeting of Developing Countries

  • A WTO Ministerial meeting of developing countries is being hosted by India in New Delhi on 13-14 May 2019. Sixteen developing countries, Six Least Developed Countries (LDC) and DG, WTO are participating in the meeting.

Space Science:

Chandrayaan-2

  • Chandrayaan-2, the lunar lander mission planned to be launched during July 9-16, will have 14 Indian payloads or study devices. The 3,800-kg spacecraft includes an orbiter which will circle the moon at 100 km; a five-legged lander called Vikram that will descend on the moon on or around September 6; and a robotic rover, Pragyan, that will probe the lunar terrain around it.

MoU / Agreements:

Konkan Railways signs agreement with Nepal

  • Konkan Railways Corporation Ltd (KRCL) signed an agreement with Nepal’s Department of Railways under which the former will supply two 1600 HP DEMU train sets.

International Affairs:

India, UK agree to boost Indo-Pacific cooperation

  • India and the United Kingdom agreed to increase their collaboration in the fields of Indo-Pacific cooperation, climate change, disaster resilience, development in third world countries amongst other areas.

Sports Affairs:

ITF women’s tennis tournament

  • Ankita Raina won the quarterfinals and enters into semifinals of ITF women’s tennis tournament.
