India’s first geothermal power project at Ladakh:

India’s first geothermal power project will be established at Puga village of eastern Ladakh. Puga has been identified as the hotspot of geothermal energy in the country by the scientists. In first phase of the pilot project, one megawatt (MW) power generation capacity will be generated. This first phase will be implemented by the ONGC-OEC.

  • A tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for establishment and implementation of the first phase was signed.
  • Geothermal Field Development Project is planned to commission by the end of 2022.

PM approved ex-gratia of 2 lakh from PMNRF:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved an ex-gratia of two lakh rupees each from Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for those who have lost their lives due to the tragic avalanche in Uttarkhand. 50 thousand rupees will be given to those seriously injured.

India has become the third topmost country in the world in terms of the number of COVID 19 vaccine doses administered. Only the United States and the United Kingdom remain ahead of India.

Symposium for Safer Roads and rectification of Black Spots held at Delhi:

Symposium on “Safer Roads/Blackspots and discussion on Plan for Rectification of Black Spots during Next One Year” was organised by Ministry of Road Transport & Highways at Media Centre of Transport Bhawan, New Delhi.

  • Secretary Road Transport & Highways, Shri Giridhar Aramane inaugurated the symposium
  • This year instead of “Road, Safety Week”, a month-long campaign “National Road Safety Month” will be observed from 18th January 2021 to 17th February 2021. This symposium is a part of this program.
  • The theme of this year is, “Sadak Suraksha- Jeevan Raksha”.

Prahlad Singh Patel co-chaired 8th Meeting of ASEAN-India Tourism Ministers:

Minister of State for Culture & Tourism, Prahlad Singh Patel co-chaired the 8th Meeting of ASEAN-India Tourism Ministers with his Cambodian counterpart Thong Khon through video conferencing.

  • The Meeting was in conjunction with the 24th Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers (M-ATM).
  • Shri Patel highlighted India’s historical and cultural links with ASEAN countries

Rs.16, 000 Cr allocated for Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana for 2021-22:

Government has allocated 16 thousand crore rupees for Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana for 2021-22 to boost the safety of farmers’ crops. Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Ministry said this will ensure maximum benefit of crop insurance reaches to farmers.

  • The Ministry said, this is a budgetary increase of around 305 crore rupees as against the previous fiscal year 2020-21.
  • This scheme extends coverage for the entire cropping cycle from pre-sowing to post-harvest.

Aadi Mahotsav is one such initiative that helps enable the economic welfare of these communities and bring them closer towards mainstream development.

India-US joint military exercise “Yudh Abhyas 20”:

India-US joint military exercise “Yudh Abhyas 20” commenced in Mahajan Field Firing Range of Bikaner district in Rajasthan. This is the 16th edition of annual bilateral joint exercise of both the armies.

  • It will continue till 21st of February. The previous version of the joint exercise was held at Seattle in United States.
  • About 250 US and 250 Indian army soldiers are participating in the exercise

UN agreement with India’s Serum Institute for 1.1 Billion Covid Vaccines:

The Serum Institute of India (SII) and UNICEF have entered into an agreement for long-term supply of the AstraZeneca-Oxford ‘Covishield’ and the Novavax vaccines. These vaccines will have access to up to 1.1 billion doses of vaccines for around 100 countries.

  • Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Covishield is being manufactured by Pune-based Serum Institute, and the Novavax is being produced by US-based Novavax Inc.

SpaceX win the contract to launch NASA’s “SPHEREx” mission:

NASA has selected Elon Musk’s SpaceX to provide launch services for an astrophysics mission to survey the sky in the near-infrared light. This mission is called as “SPHEREx” which abbreviated as “Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer”.

  • The mission currently is targeted to launch as early as June 2024 on a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex-4E at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
  • The total cost for NASA to launch SPHEREx is approximately $98.8 million, which includes the launch service and other mission related costs.

First India-EU High Level Dialogue on Trade and Investment held:

First High Level Dialogue (HLD) of India- European Union held. This was co-chaired by the Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal and the European Union Executive Vice-President & Trade Commissioner Mr. Valdis Dombrovskis.

  • In this meet, ministers agreed that within the next three months, with an objective for reaching consensus on a host of bilateral trade & investment cooperation issues.

14th International Children’s Film festival concludes in Bangladesh:

14th International Children’s Film Festival of Bangladesh (ICFFB) held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. 179 films from 37 countries were shown at various venues during the 7-day long festival organised by the Children’s Film Society (CFS) of Bangladesh.

A total of 12 awards were presented to the winners at the concluding ceremony. Some important awards of this festival and winners are:

  • Best International Feature Film Award – Dutch Film Jackie and Oopjen
  • The Best Director award- Ani Oganesyan (Armenia) for his film Stork’s Nest

Madhya Pradesh has launched ‘SAANS’ campaign:

Madhya Pradesh has launched the Social Awareness and Action to Neutralise Pneumonia Successfully (‘SAANS’) campaign with the aim of reducing infant mortality due to pneumonia.

  • The training will be imparted at the community and primary health centres.
  • Around 4,000 Health and Wellness Centres have been set up in Madhya Pradesh for this purpose.

100 Femto satellites launched at Rameshwaram, TN:

Hundred tiny “Femto” satellites, designed and developed by 1,000 students from across the country, was launched into space from Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu. These satellites were launched under a joint project by APJ Abdul Kalam International Foundation, Chennai-based Space Zone India and another organisation called Martin.

  • They will be launched via a high altitude scientific balloon and will go on to attain an altitude of 35,000-38,000 metre.
  • This launch was a try to achieve Guinness Book of World Records, World Record, Asia Book of Records, India Book of Records and Assist Book of Records.

  • Femto satellite – Femto satellite is also called a small satellite, miniaturised satellite, or smallsat. It is a satellite with a low mass and small size, usually under 500kg.

Joe Root becomes the first player in history to score a double century in his 100th Test match.

Before this record, Inzamam had hit 184 against India in a Test match in Bengaluru in 2005. His record stood for 15 years before being broken by Root, who reached his double-century.
