December 6: Mahaparinirvana Divas

• The death anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on December 6,2021 was consider as Mahaparinirvana Divas.
• The father of Indian Constitution Dr Ambedkar’s Samadhi in Mumbai, which is called Chaitya bhoomi.
• Mahaparinirvan is one of the major goals of Buddhism. It means ‘’Nirvana after death”. Parinirvan is written as Parinibbana in Pali. Pali language is native to Indian continent.
• The Buddhist text “Mahaparinibbana Sutta” considers the death of Lord Buddha at the age of 80 as the original Mahaparinirvan.
• Dr Ambedkar died in a few days after completing his work “The Buddha and his Dhamma”. Also, he converted to Buddhism after studying the religion for years together.
• He converted to Buddhism on October 14, 1956 in Nagpur along with five lakh supporters. These supporters considered Dr Ambedkar as their Buddhist leader.
• Also, he was considered as a Buddhist guru for his contributions to the eradication of untouchability. Thus, Ambedkar’s death anniversary is marked as Mahaparinirvan Divas.
• He was the first minister of law and Justice of independent India and is considered as the chief architect of the Constitution of India.
• He was an Indian economist, jurist, social reformer and politician.
• He inspired several dalit Buddhist movements and fought against social discrimination towards untouchables.
• He was awarded with the India’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna in 1990.

Nizamuddin Basti project wins two UNESCO heritage awards:

• Nizamuddin Revival Project, India’s project on the holistic urban revitalisation of the historic Nizamuddin Basti community, in New Delhi has won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation 2021.
• The project involves the meticulous restoration of over 20 historic monuments clustered around the 14th-century mausoleum of the revered Sufi saint, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya.
• Nizamuddin Revival Project won these awards under 2 categories:

*Award of Excellence

*Special Recognition for Sustainable Development.

• The settlement around the tomb of Noted Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, who settled in a Delhi village Ghiyaspur located on the tributary of River Yamuna, is known as the Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti.
• The jury of Heritage experts honoured 9 projects from 6 countries (Bangladesh, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand) with the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation 2021.

5 December: World Soil Day

• World Soil Day is celebrated every year on December 5 to raise awareness of the importance of soil quality for human well-being, food security and ecosystems.
• World Soil Day 2021 and its campaign “Halt soil salinization, boost soil productivity” aims to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being by addressing the growing challenges in soil management, fighting soil salinization, increasing soil awareness and encouraging societies to improve soil health.
• In June 2013, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Conference unanimously endorsed World Soil Day.
• It was also adopted officially in the 68th United Nations General Assembly.
• As a result, World Soil Day was for the First time Officially celebrated on 5th December 2014.
• The date of 5 December was chosen because it corresponds with the official birthday of the late H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King of Thailand, who was one of the main proponents of this initiative.
• International Union of Soil Sciences President was Laura Bertha Reyes Sánchez (Mexico).
• International Union of Soil Sciences Founded in 1924.
• International Union of Soil Sciences Headquarters: Vienna, Austria.

Ekuverin  Exercise:

• The Exercise Ekuverin is a joint military exercise held between India and Maldives. It is held between the armies of India and Maldives.
• Ekuverin means “Friends” in Dhivehi language. It is an Indo – Aryan language. It is spoken in India, Lakshadweep and Maldives.
• The Exercise is being conducted between India and Maldives since 2008.
• In 2019, the exercise was held in Pune, Maharashtra and in 2018, it was held in Maldives.
• The 2021 Exercise Ekuverin was held in Maldives.
• The exercise focused on enhancing inter – operability between the armed forces of India and Maldives.
• It also included counter – insurgency and counter – terrorism operations.
• The joint exercise in 2021, also conducted sports and cultural activities to enhance the bilateral and defence relations.
• India’s Policy of Indian Ocean is centred around providing security and political stability to Mauritius, Maldives, Seychelles and Sri Lanka. With this India aims to counter the expanding face of China in the region.
• The exercise helps the militaries to understand each other’s drills and procedures.It helps to overcome language barriers.
• It aids in weapon familiarization which is essential in war or humanitarian aid such as disaster – relief. It is also essential in disaster relief operations.

Former Andhra Pradesh CM Konijeti Rosaiah passes away:

• Former Governor of Tamil Nadu and former Chief Minister of the unified State of Andhra Pradesh, Konijeti Rosaiah (89-years) passed away.
• He had served as MLA, MLC, Lok Sabha members.
• He held several key portfolios including finance, transport, energy in the cabinets headed by Kotla Vijayabhaskhara Reddy, Channa Reddy, and YS Rajasekhara Reddy.
• India and EU will set up Clean Energy and Climate Partnership:
• India and European Union (EU) have agreed to step up their Clean Energy and Climate Partnership.
• They jointly agreed on a detailed work program until 2023 to implement the 2016 India-EU Clean Energy and Climate Partnership.
• The Panel agreed on increased technical cooperation in energy efficiency, renewable energy, green hydrogen, grid integration, storage, power market design, interconnection, cold chain, and sustainable financing.
• The Panel also agreed to explore further avenues to strengthen India-EU cooperation within the context of the International Solar Alliance.
• EU expressed its support for the close cooperation between India and the International Energy Agency.
• India and EU also agreed to exchange closely on clean energy in the frame of G20.

Neelam Rao appointed PF Commissioner:

• The Government on appointed Madhya Pradesh cadre IAS officer Neelam Shammi Rao as the Central Provident Fund Commissioner in the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).
• The ACC approved Ms. Rao’s transfer from her current post, Director General (Training) in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, to the top post of the retirement fund body in the rank of Additional Secretary.

Survey vessel ‘Sandhayak’ launched for Indian Navy:

• The Indian Navy launched ‘Sandhayak’, the first of the four large survey vessels, in Kolkata.
• The ship was launched by Pushpa Bhatt, spouse of Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt, who was the Chief Guest at the event.
• The primary role of these survey ships would be to conduct full-scale coastal and deep-water hydrographic survey of ports and harbours, and determination of navigational channels and routes.
• The ships will replace the existing Sandhayak-class survey ships and are equipped with new generation hydrographic equipment to collect oceanographic and geophysical data.

Asok Kumar appointed Director General, National Mission for  Clean Ganga:

• Ashok Kumar IAS officer Telangana 1991 batch, who is presently posted as Mission Director, National Water Mission Department, Government of India has been appointed as DG National Mission for Clean Ganga Department of Water Resources, Government of India.
• Ashok Kumar won winner of Telangana Excellence Award in 2018 and Jalmitra Award in 2002.
• He has completed many infrastructure projects like the Outer Ring Road, Krishna Phase-2 Drinking Water Pipeline, Godavari Drinking Water Pipeline Project, etc. in Hyderabad.
• He has also worked in the sectors of Medical and health, Information Technology, Tribal welfare and sports.

Jharkhand CM launched ‘Hamar Apan Budget’ Web Portal:

• Jharkhand Chief Minister, Hemant Soren has launched a web portal named ‘Hamar Apan Budget’ and a mobile application prepared by the state finance Department from the Chief Minister’s residential office in Ranchi.
• Through this portal, the general public of the state can share their suggestions for the 2022-23 budget.
• Chief Minister of Jharkhand was Hemant Soren.
• Governor was Shrimati Droupadi Murmu.

Cambridge Dictionary names ‘perseverance’ Word of the Year 2021:

• Perseverance, a word that captures the undaunted will of people across the world to never give up, despite the many challenges of the last 12 months, is Cambridge Dictionary’s Word of the Year 2021.
• Perseverance has been looked up more than 243,000 times on the website in 2021, the first time it has made a noticeable appearance.
• NASA’s Perseverance Rover made its final descent to Mars on 18 February.

Sindhu wins silver in BWF World Tour Finals:

• Indian badminton ace P V Sindhu settled for a silver medal at the BWF World Tour Finals after going down meekly against Korean teen sensation An Seyoung in the summit clash.
• Sindhu,the reigning world champion and two-time Olympic medallist, could neither match the pace nor breach the defence of the world number six Korean, losing 16-21 12-21 in the 40-minute lop-sided clash.
• It was Sindhu’s third successive loss, all straight games, to the Korean in as many meetings.
• With this victory, An Seyoung became the first ever South Korean woman to win the season-ending title.

Babri mosque was demolished in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992:

• The demolition of the Babri Masjid was illegally carried out on 6 December 1992 by a large group of activists of the Vishva Hindu Parishad and allied organisations.
• The 16th-century Babri Mosque in the city of Ayodhya, in Uttar Pradesh, had been the subject of a lengthy socio-political dispute.
• Babri Masjid, also called Mosque of Babur or Baburi Mosque, formerly Masjid-i Janmasthan, mosque in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, India.
• Along with the mosques at Sambhal and Panipat, it was one of three mosques said to have been constructed in the 16th century upon Bābur’s orders.
• The mosque was constructed in a style developed under the short-lived Lodī dynasty that preceded the Mughals: small with a single aisle arrangement of three domed bays along the wall of the qiblah.
