IMPORTANT DAYS

August 29 – International Day Against Nuclear Tests

  • On 2 December 2009, the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 August the International Day against Nuclear Tests by unanimously adopting resolution 64/35. The resolution calls for increasing awareness and education “about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.”

August 29 – National Sports Day

  • National Sports Day 2019 is being celebrated on 29 August across India. The Sports Day of India marks the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, who was born on August 29 in the year 1905.

49th Foundation Day of BPRD

  • Union Minister of Home Affairs, Shri Amit Shah, presided over the 49th Foundation Day of Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) as Chief Guest in New Delhi on August 28. Shri Shah unveiled the Golden Jubilee Logo of BPRD in the function. He also distributed Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Police Training and Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant Puraskar for Hindi Writing.

World’s First-Ever Facial Bio-Metric Data-Based Seafarer Identity Document

  • India has become the first country in the world to issue Biometric Seafarer Identity Document (BSID), capturing the facial biometric data of seafarers. Shri Mansukh Mandaviya, MoS (I/C) Shipping and Chemical & Fertilizers launched the project in New Delhi today. He also handed over the new BSID cards to five Indian seafarers
  • The new facial biometric technology is a marked improvement over the two-finger or iris-based bio-metric data, with modern security features.  It will make the identification of the SID holder more reliable and efficient while protecting their dignity and privacy.  India had made a presentation on this technology at ILO .

Assam government to make 200 Foreigners Tribunals operational from Sep 1

  • Additional Chief Secretary of the Home and Political department Kumar Sanjay Krishna said that 200 Foreigners Tribunals will become functional from 1st of September in Assam. He said, if someone’s name doesn’t appear in the NRC, he or she can appeal before the Foreigners Tribunals. Mr Krishna said that Tribunals are expected to dispose off the appeal within 60 days.

HM to flag off first fleet of eco-friendly electric buses in Ahmedabad

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off the first fleet of eco-friendly electric buses in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He also inaugurated the country’s first automated battery charging and swapping station for e-buses in Ahmedabad. Amit Shah also flagged off 18 electric buses with a facility of battery swap technology.

Star tortoise, otters get higher protection at CITES

  • India’s proposal to upgrade the protection of star tortoises (Geochelone elegans), the smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) and small-clawed otters (Anoyx cinereus) in CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species on Wild Fauna and Flora) have been approved.
  • These species have been listed under Appendix I of CITES and will now enjoy the highest degree of protection as there will be a complete international ban enforced on their trade. The upgradation was approved at the Conference of the Parties (COP18) held in Geneva.

Union HRD Minister launches Integrated Online junction for School Education ‘Shagun’

  • Union Human Resource Development Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ launched one of World’s largest Integrated Online Junction for School Education ‘Shagun’ in New Delhi. School Education Shagun (URL: htpp://shagun.govt.in/) is an overarching initiative to improve school education system by creating a junction for all online portals and websites relating to various activities of the Department of School Education and Literacy in the Government of India and all States and Union Territories.

Govt permits 100% FDI in coal mining, associated infrastructure

  • The Union Cabinet has relaxed Foreign Direct Investment rule for foreign single-brand retailers and also permitted foreign investment in contract manufacturing and coal mining. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that 100 percent FDI under automatic route in coal mining and associated infrastructure has been approved.

  • The 12th India Security Summit on the theme “Towards New National Cyber Security Strategy” was held at New Delhi. During the conference, many issues were discussed such as protection of critical national infrastructure, emerging cyber threats: incidents, challenges and response.

MoU, AGREEMENTS & CABINET APPROVALS

MoU between Indian Navy and IMD

  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Indian Navy (IN) and India Meteorological Department (IMD) was signed at Naval Base, Kochi on 28 Aug 19 for the handing over of Cyclone Detection Radar (CDR) building by IMD. The MoU will enable the Indian navy to utilise the CDR building within naval premises at Kochi for meteorological purposes.

Agreement between India and Peru

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the signing of agreement between the National Medicinal Plants Board, Ministry of AYUSH of the Republic of India and the National Institute of Health of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Peru on Cooperation in the field of Medicinal Plants.

MoU between India and Guinea

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given ex-post facto approval for the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of India and the Government of the Republic of Guinea on Cooperation in the Field of Traditional Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy.

25th Senior Women’s National Football Championship

  • The 25th Senior Women’s National Football Championship will be held in Arunachal Pradesh for the first time from September 10 to 24 next month. The tournament will be held in the oldest town of the state Pasighat in East Siang District. A total of 30 teams from across the country, representing various States, Union Territories, and Indian Railways will participate in the tournament.
