26 August – Women’s Equality Day

  • Women’s Equality Day commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which granted the women right to vote. In 1878 the amendment was first time introduced and in 1971, the U.S. Congress designated 26 August as Women’s Equality Day.

Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley passed away

  • Arun Jaitley, 66-year-old BJP stalwart, passed away at the AIIMS in New Delhi on August 24. Former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley was cremated at the Nigambodh Ghat with full state honours in the presence of political leaders across party lines and supporters.

‘Purna’ project

  • Gujarat’s Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had also launched ‘Purna’ project to eliminate malnutrition among the girls in the age group of 14 to 18. PURNA project is also known as Prevention of under Nutrition and Reduction of Nutritional Anaemia among Adolescent Girls.

Iran to let women attend football World Cup qualifier

  • In Iran, women fans will now be allowed as spectators into the stadium for next football World Cup qualifier match in October. Iran barred women spectators at matches since the 1979 Islamic revolution, with clerics arguing that women must be protected from the masculine atmosphere.

Sai Baba college girls’ idea on reusing plastic waste wins award

  • Girl students from the Sri Sai Baba National Degree College won a year of mentorship at the Atal Incubation Centre, Sri Krishnadevaraya University, for their innovative idea at the first-ever two-day Ideathon conducted by the Atal Innovation Mission on ‘Solution for Plastic Pollution’.

The day Pluto was demoted

  • On August 24, 2006, the solar system witnessed an astronomical change when the number of planets in it was cut down from nine to eight. Pluto was demoted from the category of planets and reclassified as a dwarf planet.

Advisory Board for Banking Frauds (ABBF)

  • The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has constituted the Advisory Board for Banking Frauds (ABBF) to examine bank fraud of over 50 crore rupees and recommend action. The panel was previously called as the Advisory Board on Bank, Commercial and Financial Frauds.
  • The ABBF headed by former Vigilance Commissioner T M Bhasin has been formed in consultation with the RBI and it will function as the first level of examination of all large fraud cases before recommendations or references are made to the investigative agencies by the respective Public Sector Banks.

45th G7 Summit

  • The 45th G7 summit is being held from August 24–26, 2019, in Biarritz, France. Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Biarritz, France to participate in the G7 summit. Top leaders of the world have gathered in the beach city of France to discuss various issues including global warming, climate change, biodiversity, Taxation and digital transformation.

India, Bahrain agree to enhance cooperation in the field of security & counter-terrorism

  • India and Bahrain agreed to enhance cooperation in the field of security and counter-terrorism. In a joint statement, both the countries urged the international community to reject terrorism infrastructures and to cut off any kind of support to the terrorists. The two countries also signed MoUs on cultural exchange programme,  space technology, solar energy.

‘Eminent Engineer  Award- 2019’

  • Shri Prabhakar Singh, Director General, Central Public Works Department has been chosen for the ‘Eminent Engineer Award for the Year 2019’ by the Institution of Engineers (India) for his distinguished and exemplary service in the field of Engineering and Technology.

“The King Hamad Order of the Renaissance Award”

  • Mr Modi was honoured with “The King Hamad Order of the Renaissance.” Expressing his gratitude for this unique gesture, Prime Minister said, it is an honour for entire India and a symbol of the close and friendly relations between the Kingdom of Bahrain and India.

World Skills Kazan 2019

  • The world’s biggest international vocational skills competition, WorldSkills Kazan 2019 opened with a grand ceremony at Kazan, Russia. The 48-member Indian team, resplendent in colourful attire, wowed spectators as they walked through the parade along with 62 other participating countries.

Durand Cup

  • In football, Gokulam Kerala FC won the 129th Durand Cup, defeating heavyweights Mohun Bagan 2-1 at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

Komalika Bari becomes recurve cadet world champion

  • India’s Komalika Bari became recurve cadet world champion at the World Archery Youth Championships in Madrid, Spain. The 17-year-old Komalika is now India’s second recurve cadet world champion (under-18) after Deepika Kumari who won the title in 2009.

Badminton World Championships

  • V. Sindhu on Sunday became the first Indian to win a Badminton World Championships gold by beating familiar rival Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in a lop-sided final. World No. 19 Sai Praneeth became the 2nd Indian men’s singles shuttler after Prakash Padukone in 1983 to win a medal at the World Championships.
