21 AugustInternational Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism

  • The second commemoration of  the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to Victims of Terrorism will focus on the resilience of victims and their families.To observe the International Day, the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and the Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism will launch a photographic exhibition on August 21 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The world’s oldest working locomotive

  • To commemorate the 73rd Independence Day celebrations, a Heritage Special Service hauled by EIR-21 was operated from Chennai Egmore to Kodambakkam. EIR-21 is the world’s oldest steam locomotive. The express which is similar to Fairy Queen in appearance, is 164 years old.

Para swimmer Satendra Singh Lohia crosses America’s Catalina Channel

  • Divyang Satendra Singh Lohia from Madhya Pradesh has become the first Asian swimmer to cross the Catalina Channel of America. Satendra holds the Asian record of crossing both the English and Catalina channels.

 MAHARASHTRA

Maharashtra Transport Minister launches live tracking system for MSRTC buses

  • Maharashtra Transport Minister Diwakar Raote launched a tracking system for MSRTC buses which will allow people to have real-time information about their commute. The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation has over 18,000 buses in its fleet and carries more than 67 lakh passengers daily, he informed.

ARUNACHAL PRADESH

Hollongi Airport will be completed by March 31, 2022

  • Union Minister of Civil Aviation Hardeep Singh Puri announced that the Hollongi Airport in Itanagar will be completed by March 31, 2022. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the construction of the Greenfield Airport at Hollongi near Itanagar on 9th of February this year.

Japan has a robot priest in Temple

  • A 400-year-old temple in Japan is attempting to hot-wire interest in Buddhism with a robotic priest.The android Kannon, based on the Buddhist deity of mercy, preaches sermons at Kodaiji temple in Kyoto, and its human colleagues predict that with artificial intelligence (AI), it could one day acquire unlimited wisdom.

New species of freshwater fish found

  • Scientists of the Zoological Survey of India have discovered two new species of freshwater fish from the north-eastern and northern parts of the country. While Glyptothorax gopii, a new species of catfish was found in Mizoram’s Kaladan river, Garra simbalbaraensis was found in Himachal Pradesh’s Simbalbara river. Both fish, measuring less than seven centimetres, are hill stream fauna and are equipped with special morphological features to suit rapid water flow.

Chandrayaan-2 precisely inserted in defined lunar orbit

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO, has successfully manoeuvred Chandrayaan-2 satellite into lunar orbit using the on-board propulsion system. The lander Vikram will be separated from the orbiter on 2nd September and on 4th September the lander will reach nearest to the surface of the moon at 35 Kilometres.

SBI aims to eliminate debit cards

  • The State Bank of India has plans to promote digital payment solutions and eliminate the plastic cards, according to chairman Rajnish Kumar. This is despite the huge reliance on debit cards by customers of SBI, which services a fifth of the population.

DRDO hands over design of Mobile Metallic Rampto Indian Army

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) handed over the design of Mobile Metallic Ramp (MMR) to the Indian Army at a ceremony held at DRDO Bhawan. With load bearing capacity of 70 metric ton (MT),the MMR has been designed and developed by DRDO’s premier research laboratory, Centre for Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES).
