August 01 – World Lung Cancer Day

  • World Cancer Day is observed on August 1, 2019. Lung cancer continues to be one of the most common cancers worldwide, claiming more lives yearly than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined. It is estimated that lung cancer accounts for nearly one in five cancer deaths globally.

President Kovind gives assent to Triple Talaq Bill

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has given his nod to the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 that abolishes the practice of instant Triple Talaq. The law comes into force retrospectively from 19th September 2018. The bill seeks to declare the practice of instant Triple Talaq as void and illegal and makes it a cognizable offence.

Postal department decides to convert India Post Payments Bank into SFB

  • The Postal Department has decided to convert the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) into a small finance bank (SFB), enabling it to offer small loans to customers. It also looks to open one crore accounts for IPPB in 100 days.

10 Task Forces formed to formulate New Industrial Policy

  • Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has formed 10 Task Forces to examine, review and suggest inputs for formulating New Industrial Policy of the state. The present Industrial Policy of the state was implemented in 2015. The Task Force Committee will be headed by Chief Secretary JN Singh.

HRD Minister inaugurates Indian Air Force Facilitation-cum-Publicity Pavilion

  • Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank inaugurated Indian Air Force Facilitation-cum-Publicity Pavilion at National Bal Bhawan in New Delhi. The Pavilion has been set up by Indian Air Force to motivate students to join the Indian Air Force.

Indian tourists exempted from visa fees by Sri Lankan Government

  • India is among 48 countries whose citizens have been exempted from visa fees for tourism purposes by Sri Lankan government. Indian tourist constitutes the maximum number with around one fourth of total tourist arrivals. Tourism is Sri Lanka’s third largest and fastest growing source of foreign currency.

U.S. Embassy organizes South Asia Air Quality Tech Camp

  • The U.S. Embassy in Nepal has organized a South Asia Air Quality Tech Camp in Kathmandu. The aim of camp is to address political, social and scientific facets of air pollution problem.

India offers 5-lakh-dollar-grant to Gambia

  • India has offered a grant of 5 lakh dollar to the Gambia for skill development and cottage industry project. The two countries also signed an MoU on Cooperation in the field of Traditional Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy.

52nd ASEAN summit

  • Foreign Ministers from South East Asia are attending the 52nd ASEAN summit in Bangkok. The meeting held for deeper integration to expand trade and bolster prosperity in the region amid rising global challenges.

Rakesh Asthana given additional charge of Narcotics Control Bureau

  • IPS officer Rakesh Asthana has been given the additional charge of Narcotics Control Bureau for six months. Presently he is serving as Director-General of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security.

  • Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar launched redesigned dynamic website of publication division www.publicationsdivision.nic.in to provide realtime purchase facilities to book lovers. The website will provide information about publication division’s books and journals.

  • Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched Atal Community Innovation Centre in New Delhi to encourage the spirit of innovation at the community level. This initiative aims to encourage the spirit of innovation through solution-driven design thinking to serve society.

Lok Sabha to become paperless from next session

  • Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has announced that the Lower House will become paperless from the next session. This move will save crores of rupees to the Government.

Cabinet approves ISRO Technical Liaison Unit at Moscow

  • Cabinet has given nod to the setting up of ISRO Technical Liaison Unit (ITLU) at Moscow in Russia. The unit will collaborate with Space agencies and industries in Russia and neighbouring countries for mutually synergetic outcomes.

Cabinet decides to introduce bill to increase number of SC Judges

  • Cabinet has decided to introduce bill to increase the number of Supreme Court Judges from 30 to 33 excluding Chief Justice of India. Government in 2016 had also increased the number of High Court judges from 906 to 1079.

MoU between ISRO and the Bolivian Space Agency

  • The Cabinet also approved MoU between ISRO and the Bolivian Space Agency on Cooperation in the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes.
