World Day for Laboratory Animals 2019

  • World Day for Laboratory Animals was instituted in 1979 and World Day for Animals in Laboratories (WDAIL) which is also known as World Lab Animal Day is held every year on 24 April.

Rankings:

Arunachalam Muruganantham ranks 45th in list of World’s 50 Greatest Leaders

  • Social entrepreneur from Coimbatore Arunachalam Muruganantham has joined some of the global leaders in the list of World’s 50 Greatest Leaders 2019 by Fortune Magazine. He is ranked 45th in the list released recently.

Appointments & Resignation:

New Controller General of Defence Accounts

  • Shri Rajendra Kumar Nayak took over as the 52nd Controller General of Defence Accounts. He was Additional Controller General of Defence Accounts, Defence Accounts Department, Ministry of Defence before taking over as the CGDA.

Nasim Zaidi quits Jet Airways board

  • Former Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi has quit the Board of Directors of grounded carrier Jet Airways. Mr. Zaidi, who was also a former civil aviation secretary, joined the Jet Airways board in August last year as a non-executive and non-independent director.

The world’s largest indoor waterfall at Singapore’s Changi Airport

  • The idea for Jewel’s indoor forest and record-breaking waterfall developed in response to Changi Airport’s request for proposals to build a facility with retail and dining, a host of travel-related amenities and some sort of attraction.

Economic Affairs:

Leather exports rise 8% in FY19

  • India registered about 8% growth in export of leather, leather products and footwear during 2018-19 and is aiming to achieve 9% to 10% growth during the current fiscal.

Infosys to join Huawei Cloud Partner Network

  • Huawei Cloud and Infosys have entered into a strategic cooperation to help enterprise customer’s transition quickly to the digital cloud. As part of the agreement, Infosys would join the Huawei Cloud Partner Network (HCPN) and the two companies would develop new cloud solutions leveraging Huawei Cloud.

Banking Affairs:

RBI swap auction gets bids more than thrice the notified amount

  • The second dollar-rupee buy/sell auction also saw healthy demand with the Reserve Bank of India getting 255 bids worth $18.65 billion compared with the notified amount of $5 billion.

Sports Affairs:

Asian Athletics 2019

  • Swapna Barman won a silver medal in Heptathlon at the Asian Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar after scoring a season-best 5993 points. The 4x400m Mixed relay team followed suit by winning another silver later in the day to take India’s medal tally at the event to 13.
