National News

Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya has released the Food Safety index for States.

  • On Food Safety Day 2023 (June 7) with the theme ‘Food Quality Saves Lives’, Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandavia released the Food Safety index for the states.
  • The state of Gujarat has topped the National Food Security Index. Notable that, Gujarat ranked second among large states in the State Food Security Index (SFSI) for the 2021-22 assessment.

The Union Cabinet has approved the Marketing Minimum Support Price (MSP) for Kharif crops 2023-24.

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Modi has approved the increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all Kharif crops for the year 2023-24.
  • The approval is said to ensure remunerative prices for farmers’ produce and encourage proper marketing. The Union Cabinet has also approved the list of prices for rice crops.

ONGC plans to open a National Disaster Mitigation Center in Jammu.

  • Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri and Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha laid the foundation stone for ONGC’s “National Disaster Mitigation Center” and “Yatri Niwas” in Jammu on June 06.
  • The minister said that if it is established, it will be possible to act quickly in times of calamity and provide immediate assistance to the people.

Japan joins the US$95 million undersea cable project.

  • On June 6, the Japanese government announced that Japan has joined the United States and Australia as signatories to a US$95 million undersea cable project to improve connectivity in the Indo-Pacific region and connect the island nations of Eastern Micronesia.
  • The roughly 2,250-kilometer-long project will connect the Tarawa regions of Kosre and Kiribati in the Federated States of Micronesia with the cable landing site of Bonpe in Micronesia through an undersea cable version, the Japanese foreign ministry said in the announcement.
  • Security experts have said that India also has a chance to escape from China’s threats by considering the security alliance of the United States, Japan, Australia and India in the Quad system.

Inflation in Bangladesh recorded the highest inflation rate in a decade at 9.94% in May.

  • Bangladesh recorded its highest monthly inflation rate in a decade. That means the country’s monthly inflation in May reached 9.94 percent, according to data released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BPS) on June 06.
  • Prior to this, the highest inflation rate was recorded at 10.11 percent in 2010-11. According to the report, the increase in the prices of food and other staples is responsible for this rise in inflation.

The Japanese government plans to appoint at least 30% of directors of large companies to be women by 2023.

  • According to a recently released draft plan by the Gender Equality Bureau, the Japanese government will work towards a goal of having women make up at least 30% of directors in large and medium-sized companies by 2023.
  • It is said that this initiative will protect the gender equality of the country and will be a great strength for greater diversity and innovative development.

State news

Government of Madhya Pradesh has announced a scheme named “CM Learn and Earn”.

  • In the state of Madhya Pradesh, the state government announced on June 7 that it will launch a program called “Chief Minister’s Learning and Earning Scheme” to educate and develop the employability of the youth.
  • Along with learning skills, stipends of Rs 8,000 to 10,000 will be provided to the youth and at least one lakh youth will be given developmental training under the scheme, the notification said.

Bihar State Government and AAI have signed MoU to develop Purnea and Darbhanga Airport.

  • The Bihar state government and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) have signed MoUs for airport development and construction of new “Civil Enclaves” at Purnea and Darbhanga airports in Bihar.
  •  According to the agreement, construction will take place on 52.18 acres of land in Purnea and 78 acres of land in Darbhanga under this MoU.

An MoU has been signed between NHPC and Torren Power for hydropower projects.

  • NHPC and Torrent Power has signed an MoU with the Government of Maharashtra on June 06 to develop advanced hydroelectric storage project.
  • TORRENT has signed an MoU with the Government of Maharashtra to develop three hydro storages of “5,700 MW” capacity. The company announced that the project will be implemented at three locations in Karjat, Raigarh district (3,000 MW), Mawal (1,200 MW) and Junnar (1,500 MW).

Gujarat’s 20th “Shala Praveshotsav” is scheduled to start from June 12 to 14.

  • The state government has announced that the 20th edition of the “Shala Praveshotsav program’ in Gujarat will begin from June 12 to 14 with an aim to “increase enrollment in schools in border villages”.
  • Shala Praveshotsav is an initiative program run by the Gujarat Education Department for the past two decades. It is noteworthy that this initiative was launched in 2003 when Prime Minister Modi took office as the Chief Minister of Gujarat with the aim that “No child of Gujarat should drop out of school”.

An exhibition for innovation start-ups specializing in security “iDEX” has been organized at the Research and Innovation Park at IIT Delhi.

  • iDEX’s partner incubator and FITT-IIT Delhi organized an exhibition for innovative start-ups specializing in security “iDEX” at the Research and Innovation Park, IIT Delhi.
  • The event will feature a brief presentation of Innovations in Defense Excellence (iDEX) and showcase the progress of Indian startups in Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, Power Systems, Specialized Drones and Drone Delivery Systems, Space Proposition Systems and other related technologies. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius attended the event.

Inauguration of the conference titled “Growing India: Reimagining Rural Development for Shared Prosperity”.

  • Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Giriraj Singh inaugurated a two-day conference titled “Growing India: Reimagining Rural Development for Shared Prosperity” in New Delhi on June 06.
  • During this conference Amrita called upon the youth to have a sharp mind on “Rural development” and to create India’s blueprint for rural development. Also the aim of the conference is to support and improve the livelihood and economic opportunities of women and to actively promote women in the SHG network under the Lakhpati programme.

Economic news

The World Bank has announced that India’s GDP growth will slow to 6.3% in FY2024.

  • India’s economic growth will slow to 6.3% in 2023-24 due to rising borrowing costs and higher inflation in 2025-26, the World Bank said in its latest report.
  • This is a significant 0.3 percentage point downward revision from the previous estimate of 6.6%. Nevertheless, India is expected to remain among the fastest growing economies, the report noted.

“Sunil Kumar” has won gold in the decathlon category at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships.

  • Indian athlete Sunil Kumar won gold in men’s decathlon by scoring “7003 points” at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Yecheon, South Korea on June 06.
  • Apart from her, Pooja has won silver in women’s high jump with a height of 1.82m and Bushra Khan has won silver in women’s 3000m.

 World Oceans Day 2023

  • World Oceans Day is observed every year on June 8 to raise awareness among people around the world about the importance of seas and oceans and ways to protect them.
  • The day was recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008. This year’s theme is ‘Planet Ocean: Tides are Changing’.
