National News

Union Government allotted Rs 2,700 for developing sewerage infrastructure in Ganga basin

  • The Union government has approved projects worth around 2,700 crore rupees for developing sewerage infrastructure in the Ganga basin, and the approvals were given during the 6th meeting of the Executive Committee of National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG). Along with this afforestation programmes for the year 2022-23 for Uttarakhand and Bihar were also approved at an estimated cost of 42.80 crore rupees.
  • The aim of the project is to create an enabling environment for climate resilient and sustainable ecosystem management with community participatory approach.

Ministry of Power, DRDO sign MoU for implementation of Early Warning System

  • The Ministry of Power and the Defense Research and Development Organization, DRDO, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, for implementation of Early Warning System for Vulnerable Hydro Projects and Power Stations.
  • It is to work jointly towards developing suitable mitigation measures against avalanches, landslides, glaciers, glacial lakes and other geo-hazards.

IIT Roorkee, AIIMS Delhi develop a mobile app for pregnant women

  • The Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkee and New Delhi-based All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have developed ‘SwasthGarbh’ smartphone app for providing antenatal care and real-time medical support to pregnant women.
  • The app has been posited as a tool women in rural areas or those who may not have easy access to doctors can use. The app that provides instantaneous advice by doctors and is clinically endorsed and credible.

Madhya Pradesh Shikhar Khel Alankaran ceremony

  • Madhya Pradesh Shikhar Khel Alankaran ceremony was held at Rabindra Bhawan,Bhopal on 26th December 2022.
  • In the event, the logo of Khelo India Youth Games-2022 was unveiled by union minister Mr Thakur and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Khelo India Youth Games 2022 to be held on January 31 to February 11, 2023.

International Book Fair in Tamil Nadu

  • The 46th Chennai International Book Fair will be held from 6th January to 22nd January 2023 at Nandanam YMCA Grounds with 800 stalls.
  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin will also inaugurate the exhibition. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu will present the Muthamil Scholar Kalaignar Karunanidhi Porkizhi Award for the year 2023, the Best Publishers Award and the Babasi Awards at the opening ceremony of the book fair.

President of India inaugurated ‘PRASAD’ project in Andhra Pradesh

  • President of India Droupadi Murmu inaugurated ‘PRASAD’ project at the tourism facilitation centre in the pilgrim town of Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh on 26 December 2022.
  • The hill town will get a pilgrim complex, amenities centres at Hatakeswaram and Sikh Areswaram, renovation of the Pushkarini, aesthetic illumination at the temple, ATM and banking services etc with a total outlay of ₹48.03 crore under the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASAD).

The 47th Tourism and Industry Fair will be held at Chennai

  • Tourism and Industry Expo at Chennai Theevu Thidal is scheduled to start on December 30, 2022 and is scheduled to run for 70 days.
  • In this exhibition, various halls including Government Department Halls, State Public Sector Institutions Performance Halls, Central Government Institutions, and Energy Department Halls are placed so that the public can easily learn about the new projects and development works of the Government.

CEBR announced that India will become third largest economy by 2035

  • A British consultancy called the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR), has announced that India will become the third largest economy by 2035 and now India is in fifth position.
  • CEBR, in its annual World Economic League Table, announced that over the next five years, India’s annual rate of GDP growth is expected to average 6.4 percent after which growth is expected to average 6.5 percent in the subsequent nine years.

SN Jaya Murugan elected as Chairman of Tamil Nadu Volleyball Association

  • Annual general meeting of Tamil Nadu State Volleyball Association was held at Vikravandi, Villupuram district.
  • Industrialist S.N. Jayamurugan has been elected unopposed for the vacant position due to the death of A. K. Chitra Pandian, who was the chairman of the association.

Three Deputy Prime Ministers of Nepal have been appointed

  • Pushpa Kamal Dahal (a) Prasanda (68) was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Nepal on 27 December 2022 in a ceremony held at the President’s Palace of Nepal.
  • Sonda Bishnu Prasad Paudel of CPN-UML led by former Prime Minister Chama Oli, Sonda Narayan Srastha of CPN-Maoist Center led by Prasanda and Sonda Rabi Lamisane of Rashtriya Swatantra Party have been appointed as Deputy Prime Ministers in the new government.
    • Bishnu Prasad Paudel has been allotted the Finance Ministry, Narayan Srastha the Infrastructure and Transport Department and Lamisane Home affairs ministry.

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) authority chairman was appointed

  • Santosh Kumar Yadav was appointed as chairman of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), on 26th December 2022.
  • Yadav, a 1995-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, is currently working as additional secretary in the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education.

CEO of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was appointed

  • Ganji Kamala V Rao has been named Chief Executive Officer, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • Rao, a 1990-batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, is currenty the managing director of the India Tourism Development Corporation Ltd.

First case of “brain-eating amoeba,” has been reported in South Korea

  • The first infection from Naegleria fowleri, or “brain-eating amoeba,” has been reported in South Korea, the health authorities said on 26th December 2022.
  • Naegleria fowleri is an amoeba commonly found in warm freshwater lakes, rivers, canals and ponds throughout the world. The amoeba is inhaled through the nose and travels to the brain to destroy brain tissue.
    • A total of 381 Naegleria fowleri cases have been reported as of 2018 in the world including in the US, India and Thailand.

National Boxing Championship

  • The National Boxing Championship for Girls was held in Madhya Pradesh. Bill Railways won the championship with 10 medals including 5 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze.
  • Madhya Pradesh team is second with 8 medals (1 gold, 3 silver, 5 bronze) and Haryana team is third with 4 medals (2 gold, 2 bronze).
    • Telangana’s Nikath Zareen – won the gold medal in the 50 kg category defeating Railways’ Anamika.
    • In the 75 kg category, Assam’s Lovelina Borgohain – beat Arundhati Seludari of Services.
    • Manju Rani of Railways won the gold medal in the 48 kg category defeating Kalaivani of Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Official Language Act passed day

  • The official language is the language authorized by law by the State Government to carry out procedures in offices. The language spoken by the majority of the population in a state or country should be the official language.
  • Accordingly, on December 27, 1956 in Tamil Nadu, the “Tamil Official Language Act” was passed in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly to make Tamil the official language of Tamil Nadu.
