Sri Lanka institutes a panel to probe findings of former commissions

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has set up a three member committee to probe the findings of previous commission that look into the alleged rights abuses committed by both LTTE and the government troops during the 2009 armed conflict.

  • Regarding this, Rajapaksa has appointed a judge of the highest court, a former chief of the police and a retired bureaucrat to the three-member panel.

  • The bridge connects Bholaganj and Sohbar to Nongjri in East Khasi Hills, bordering Bangladesh.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has inaugurated Toshali National Crafts Mela in Bhubaneswar.

  • The Toshali Crafts Mela is one of the most popular handlooms and handicrafts fairs in Eastern India.
  • This Mela is being held till February 4,2021. Out of the total, 170 stalls represent Odisha textiles and crafts and 80 stalls are of other states.

Indian mathematician Nikhil Srivastava has been awarded the coveted 2021 Michael and Sheila Held Prize.

  • The other two winners Daniel Alan Spielman from Yale University and Adam Marcus, the Ecole polytechnique federale de Lausanne
  • They won this award for solving long-standing questions on the Ramanujan graphs and Kadison-Singer problem.

Shyam Srinivasan named as Business Standard Banker of the Year

Federal Bank Managing Director and chief executive officer was named as Business Standard Banker of the Year for 2019-20.
