National News

The Maritime Anti-Piracy Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha

  • The Prevention of Piracy Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha on 21 December 2022. The Prevention of Piracy Bill provides for the death penalty and life imprisonment for criminals involved in piracy.
  • In the absence of any specific legislation against piracy for India’s security and economic interest, the present bill is said to provide an effective legal remedy against piracy, and the bill was passed by voice vote.

International news

An Indian-origin attorney was appointed the first non-white treasurer of this US state

  • Vivek Malek, a 45-year-old Indian-origin attorney has been appointed as the first non-white treasurer of the US state of Missouri, announced by Governor Mike Parson on 21 December 2022.
  • Malek, who holds a bachelor’s degree from Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak, also pursued a master of law from the University Of Illinois College Of Law in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, and he began practicing law in 2006 and opened a law firm in 2011.

The Chairperson of the Karnataka Upper House has been elected

  • Basavaraj Horaty has filed his nomination for the post of Karnataka Upper-Assembly Secretary-Speaker.Following this, Basavaraj Horaty was unanimously elected unopposed as the Speaker of the Upper-Assembly in the elections held on December 21, 2022.
  • Also Basavaraj Horaty has already been the Upper-House Speaker 2 times. It is noteworthy that he has been elected as the Chairman of the Upper House for the 3rd time

INS Rajali Commanding Officer has been appointed

  • Kamod Kapil Mehta assumed charge as the Commanding Officer of INS Rajali Naval Air Station, Arakkonam, the flagship air base of the Indian Navy on 21 December 2022.
  • Commodore R. Vinod Kumar, who was the Commanding Officer of this airport, was transferred and Commodore Kapil Mehta was appointed as the new Commanding Officer.
    • He has already served as the Officer-in-Charge of Indian Navy flagships Trisul and Commanding Officer of INS Vinash and INS Shivalik.

Hemant Gupta appointed as a chairman of New Delhi International Arbitration Centre

  • Former Supreme Court judge Hemant Gupta has been appointed as the chairperson of New Delhi International Arbitration Centre (NDIAC).
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Justice Hemant Gupta (R) as NDIAC chairperson and that of Ganesh Chandru and Anant Vijay Palli as its part-time members of the NDIAC
    • The NDIAC has been established for the purpose of creating an independent and autonomous regime for institutionalized arbitration.

Archaeological studies

3000 years ago Vijayanagar inscription found at Tirupattur

  • Archaeologists have discovered traces of the Paleolithic age of around 3,000 years ago at soodukattor, 15 km from Tirupattur. Also, during the tilling of the land, many earthen tiles and earthenware were found broken.
  • Also 22 lines on the front and 13 lines on the back are written on a 3 feet high slab stone at Annandapatti village. Archaeologists have found that this inscription was written during the reign of Vijayanagara King Venkatapatirayar who ruled Tamil Nadu in the 16th century AD.

1000 year old inscription found near Pudukottai district

  • An Ayyanar sculpture of about a thousand years old Pallava period has been found in archaeological research in Vazhamangalam village,Kulathur Taluk, Pudukottai district.
  • Archaeologists have found the statue to be three and a half feet tall, two and a half feet wide, with a folded left leg and a raised left arm, in the Pallava style.

Science and Technology

Discovery of new type of coronavirus found in India

  • In the year 2019, the spread of the corona virus was first detected in the Wuhan province of China. Now, in the year 2022, when the world has reached the normal state, the new type of corona virus is spreading very rapidly in countries including China and Japan.
  • The virus has been named Omicron BF7, and BF7 infections have been identified in three people in Vadodara and Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India.

UIDAI HQ Building wins top Green Building Award 2022

  • GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) is a national rating system for green buildings in India, UIDAI HQ has been awarded as a winner among the existing highest rated building category.
  • UIDAI believes and promotes the idea of recycling and reuse to reduce carbon footprint. It is recycling and reusing water and has been adhering to sustainable waste management practices, for this activities UIDAI receives the top Green Building Award.

Kala Paani novel has been awarded as the Sahitya Akademi Award for the year 2022  

  • Kaala Paani (The Story of the First King Who Was Abducted) written by Rajendran, a retired IAS officer who served as the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Society Election Commissioner, has been awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for 2022.
  • The life of the Tamils, the environment, the action of the British, is written before the Kalaiyar Kovil War, which is a Kala Paani novel.
    • Central Government Sahitya Akademi Award is given annually to the best literature-based novels written in major languages including Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.

Book Publications

Book titled named as ‘The Indian Navy@75 Reminiscing the Voyage’

  • Commodore Ranjit B Rai and defense journalist Aritra Banerjee wrote a book titled ‘The Indian Navy@75 Reminiscing the Voyage’.
  • The books tell how the exploits and sacrifices of the British-era Royal Indian Navy (RIN) during World War 2 were omitted by British historians who could not digest the RIN’s mutiny in 1946.

‘Fit At Any Age’ book was launched by Retd. Air Marshal PV Iyer

  • Air Marshal PV Iyer (retd.) has launched his book ‘Fit At Any Age’ at India International Centre, New Delhi,the book was published by Bloomsbury India.
  • This book explains how adhering to a culture of fitness can keep illnesses at bay. He also writes about his experience about why it’s important to work out and why one’s journey towards fitness should start early.

The International Cricket Council Ranking List was published

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) has released a new ranking list of Test cricketers.
  • Batsmen ranked according to this list
    • Marnes Labuschagne of Australia (936 points) has topped the list.
    • Pakistan captain Babar Azam is ranked 2nd place.
    • Steven Smith of Australia is ranked 3rd place .
    • Australian Travis Head is ranked 4th place.
    • Indian players Rishabh Pant is at 6th position, Rohit Sharma is at 9th position and Virat Kohli is at 12th position.

Asian Wrestling Championships 2023

  • The United World Wrestling team announced that the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023 will take place between March 28 to April 2nd in New Delhi.
  • This Wrestling Championships ship will feature men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle, and men’s Greco-Roman divisions. Already Delhi will host the tournament in February 2020.

National Farmers Day/Kisan Diwas 

  • National Farmers Day or Kisan Diwas is celebrated annually on 23 December to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh.
  • He was the fifth Prime Minister of India and is remembered for the contributions made by him towards the upliftment of farmers across the country.
