Avani Chaturvedi becomes first IAF woman fighter pilot to participate in aerial war games abroad

  • Squadron Leader Avani Chaturvedi will become an Indian Air Force (IAF) female fighter pilot for the first time; will participate in aerial war games.
  • She will be a part of the Indian contingent for the maiden ‘Veer Guardian 2023’ joint exercise between India and Japan.While Chaturvedi is a Sukhoi-30 fighter pilot she is also qualified in MiG-21 Bison fighter jet and completed her training on Hawk Advanced Jet Trainers and became one of the first woman combat pilots along with Mohana Singh Jitarwal and Bhawana Kanth.

Union Minister unveils the theme for National Science Day 2023

  • Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh unveils the theme for National Science Day 2023, as” Global Science for Global Wellbeing” at National Media Centre, Delhi.
  • National Science Day (NSD) is celebrated every year on 28th February to commemorate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’, India enters 2023, and the theme indicates India’s emerging global role and rising visibility in the international arena.

Osmanabad District Court becomes first court in Maharashtra to introduce e-system of functioning

  • The e-system of functioning was first introduced in the Osmanabad District Court in Maharashtra.
  • Under this system, all the court-related work including filing, payment and other court services, etc. can be done through mobile app or online modes.

The father of laparoscopic surgery has passed away

  • Demton Eric Udwadia from India, known as the father of laparoscopic surgery, passed away on 07/01/2023 after suffering from health problems for the past few months.
  • Demton worked for many years at JJ Government Hospital, Byculla, Maharashtra. In recognition of his excellent medical service, the central government honored him with the Padma Vibhushan award in 2017.

Village in Anantnag in J&K receives electricity for first time in 75 years

  • Locals of a tribal area in Jammu and Kashmir’s village Tethan in Dooru block of Anantnag district received electricity connection for the first time after almost 75 years of Independence.
  • Electricity in Tethan in the Dooru block of Anantnag was provided under a centrally-sponsored PM Development Package scheme.
    • The area, housing not more than 200 people, earlier relied on traditional wood for their energy needs. People used candlelight and lamps for survival amid their daily needs.

Uttarakhand’s Joshimath town declared a ‘disaster area’

  • The town of Joshimath is located at the foothills of the Himalayas in Chamoli District, Uttarakhand. At the end of December 2022, various houses and commercial buildings in Joshimath city suffered massive cracks.
  • Currently, landslides and landslides are occurring in the Joshimath Nagar area, and the area has been declared a disaster prone area, according to the Chamoli district judge.
    • According to Section 33, 34 of the Disaster Management Act, the people living in landslide prone areas have been ordered to evacuate immediately to prevent danger to life and property.

  • Indian-origin Manpreet Monica Singh was sworn in as the first woman Sikh judge of the Harris County Civil Court in Texas, USA.
  • An attorney for 20 years, Monica has served in numerous civil rights organizations at the local, state, and national levels

SBI Card re-appoints Rama Amara as MD & CEO

  • SBI Cards and Payment Services said that its board approved re-appointment of Rama Mohan Rao Amara as managing director (MD) & chief executive officer (CEO) of the company for a further period of one year effective from 30 January 2023.
  • Rama Mohan Rao Amara is an engineering graduate, and also has renowned financial accreditations namely CFA and FRM and is a Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB). Rao, deputy managing director in State Bank of India (SBI), took the helm at SBI Card on 30 January 2021.
    • SBI Cards and Payment Services is a non-banking financial company that offers an extensive credit card portfolio to individual cardholders and corporate clients.

Meta appoints Vikas Purohit as Director of Global Business Group in India

  • Meta announced that it has appointed Vikas Purohit as the Director of Global Business Group in India, Purohit’s role will involve leading the company’s relationship with the biggest brands and advertising agencies in the country to help drive revenue for the company.
  • Purohit has over 20 years of experience in senior business, sales and marketing roles with companies such as Tata Click, Amazon, Reliance Brands, Aditya Birla Group and Tommy Hilfiger before moving into retail at Reliance Brands.

  • Supreme Court Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud has been nominated for the Global Leadership Award presented by the Legal Profession Center of Harvard Law School, USA.
  • The award will be presented in recognition of his lifetime service to the legal profession in India and globally.

  • Famous economist and popular historian Sanjeev Sanyal is set to release his latest book, “Revolutionaries: The Other Story of How India Won Its Freedom,”
  • His book highlights the human side of these revolutions through tales and other nuances rather than being merely dry history.

Adelaide International Tennis tournament

  • Adelaide International Tennis Tournament held in Australia.
  • In the men’s singles final of the series, Djokovic won the championship against Sebastian Korda of the United States.
  • In the women’s singles category of the tournament, Aryna Sabalenkaof Belarus won the match between Linda Noskova of Czech Republic and Sabalenka became the champion for the first time.

Maratha Open Tennis Tournament

  • The 5th Maratha Open International Tennis Tournament was held in Pune. In the singles final, Dutchman Talon Kriegspoor defeated Frenchman Benjamin Bonji to win the ATP International title for the first time and was awarded a prize of Rs 88 lakh.
  • In the doubles final, Belgium’s Sander Gilli-Joran Ligen won the title by defeating India’s Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan-Sreeram Balaji (both from Tamil Nadu).

United Cup Tennis Series

  • The first United Cup tennis series was held in Australia and the first matches of the series began on 29 December. Teams from a total of 18 countries participated in 6 divisions.
  • Team USA won the championship in the final between USA and Italy in the league and knock-out series.

World Hindi Day

  • Vishwa Hindi Divas or World Hindi Day is celebrated on January 10th every year to mark the anniversary of the first time that Hindi was spoken in the United Nations General Assembly in 1949.
  • This day is celebrated in India and around the world by Hindi speakers and enthusiasts as an opportunity to promote the language and its literature. The first World Hindi Day was celebrated in 2006.
    • The theme of the day is “To make Hindi a part of public opinion, although it doesn’t necessarily mean that one has to leave their mother tongue”
