NATIONAL:

LokSabha passes Citizenship Amendment Bill

The LokSabha on Monday passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) that seeks to give citizenship to refugees from the Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, Sikh and Zoroastrian communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

The Bill was passed After  seven-hour-long debate,  with 311 members favouring and 80 voting against it.

India Moves from 130 to 129 in human development index: UNDP report

India ranks 129 out of 189 countries on the 2019 Human Development Index (HDI) — up one slot from the 130th position last year — according to the Human Development Report (HDR) released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Monday.

The HDI measures average achievement in three basic dimensions of human development — life expectancy, education and per capita income.

Norway, Switzerland, Ireland occupied the top three positions in that order. Germany is placed fourth along with Hong Kong, and Australia secured the fifth rank on the global ranking.

Karnataka bypolls: BJP wins 12 out of15 seats

The ruling BharatiyaJanata Party (BJP) in Karnataka has managed to get a simple majority by winning 12 of the 15 seats which went to by-elections.

Congress was able to win in two, Janata Dal Secular (JDS)  drew a blank while a BJP rebel won as an Independent candidate.

At present, BJP has 105 legislators in the assembly and enjoys the support of one independent MLA, taking its strength to 106. This election was crucial for BJP, which needed to win at least six seats to ensure simple majority in legislative Assembly.

With this victory in by-elections, Karnataka Chief ministerYediyurappa is set to consolidate his power. He is prepared to complete three-and-a-half-years of his term.

Govt further reduces stock limit of onion for retailers to check hoarding

Union Government has further reduced the stock limit of onion to two tonnes from five tonnes for retailers as part of efforts to check hoarding of the kitchen staple. The decision has been taken to augment availability of onions in open market.

Ministry of Consumer Affairs informed that states have been asked to carry out immediate anti-hoarding operations. Stock limit will continue to remain the same for wholesalers. Importers will continue to remain exempted for imported onions.

Manipur will get Inner Line Permit system, says Amit Shah:

Union Home Minister Amit Shah told the LokSabha on Monday that Manipur will be brought under the Inner Line Permit system, thereby exempting it from the provisions of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019.

Bill on extension of SC, ST quota in LS, Assemblies introduced:

 A Bill seeking to extend by 10 years reservation to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the LokSabha and the Assemblies and remove the provision of nominating two members of the Anglo-Indian community to the LokSabha was introduced in the House on Monday.

The reservation given to SCs, STs and the Anglo-Indian community for the past 70 years is to end on January 25, 2020.

SC asks States for report on Food Security Act:

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the States to produce proof on record that they have established a mechanism for the poor to complain about inaccessibility to food under the Public Distribution System (PDS).

The order came on a petition filed by the mother and sister of a 11-year-old Dalit girl who died of starvation in Jharkhand on August 28, 2017.

Isro to launch surveillance satellite Risat-2BR1 along with 9 foreign satellites on Dec 11:

India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket would launch the country`s latest spy satellite RISAT-2BR1 and nine foreign satellites on December 11, said the Indian space agency. According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the rocket numbered as PSLV-C48 will lift off at 3.25 p.m. with RISAT-2BR1, a radar imaging earth observation satellite weighing about 628 kg.

The rocket will blast off from the first launch pad at Sriharikota rocket port in Andhra Pradesh and place RISAT-2BR1 into an orbit of 576 km. The satellite will have a life of five years.

Parandur near Chennai considered as place for the second airport now:

For the Chennai city’s second airport, Parandur in Kancheepuram district is now being considered as a favourable site.

As many as 4700 acres of lands have been identified at Parandur and 12 adjoining villages.

Imported Onions arrive in Tiruchi:

Prices of onions, both the big and small varieties, started easing in the wholesale market in Tiruchi on Monday as the arrivals improved. The market received arrivals from Perambalur, Tiruchi and Namakkal districts.Along with that it also got about 25 tonnes of onions from Egypt.

Finland elects Sanna Marin, the youngest-ever Prime Minister:

Finland’s Social Democrats elected a 34-year-old former transport minister to the post of the prime minister, making her the youngest head of government in the country’s history.

Sanna Marin is the world’s Youngest Prime Minister, replaces outgoing leader AnttiRinne

South Africa’s ZozibiniTunzi named Miss Universe 2019:

South Africa’s ZozibiniTunzi has been crowned Miss Universe for the year 2019, beating more than 90 contestants, including Miss India, from around the globe.

The 26-year-old Ms. Tunzi was declared the winner at a televised event.

Indian contestant Vartika Singh crashed out of the world’s biggest beauty pageant after securing a place in the top 20.

13th South Asian Games come to close in Nepal today:

13th South Asian Games will come to a close in Nepal this evening. Indian athletes continue to dominate medals tally on the penultimate day yesterday. India consolidated its top position with 294 medals comprising 159 gold, 91 silver and 44 bronze medals.
