  • World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern. It was declared World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969.

  • Karnataka Health department has started a drive against H1N1 or swine flu. The move comes as 400 positive cases of the flu were reported in the state since January this year.

UN panel on climate change issues extensive warning on rising global temperatures

  • The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has issued it’s the most extensive warning on the risks of rising global temperatures.
  • The report says the world is now completely off track, heading towards increase of 3 degree Celsius.
  • The report pleads to keep the target of 1.5 degree Celsius above pre-industrial level.

IMF predicts 7.3% growth rate

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicted a growth rate of 7.3 per cent for India in the current year and 7.4 per cent in 2019.

  • IMF study says gender diversity is likely to boost productivity growth including in countries like India. The Research Paper said the women bring new skills to the workplace.

Centre decides to start issuing Sovereign Gold Bonds

  • IndiaExternal Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj launched India for Humanity initiative in New Delhi as part of 150th Birth Anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi being held over the next one year.
  • ‘India for Humanity’ features a year-long series of artificial limb fitment camps in a number of countries spanning the globe.

MoU between India and Tajikistan

  • India and Tajikistan signed MoUs in various fields including political relations, strategic research, agriculture, renewable energy, traditional medicine, space technology, youth affairs, Culture and Disaster Management.

Asian Para Games

  • Ekta Bhyan won gold at the Asian Para Games by topping the women’s club throw event. Monu Ghangas in the men’s shot put, Anandan Gunasekaran in men’s 200m and Jayanti Behera in the women’s 200m race secured bronze medal.

Youth Olympics

  • Jeremy Lalrinnunga wins the first gold for India in the Men’s 62 kg category weight lifting. Sandeep Chaudhary in Javelin throw men’s category, Raju Rakshitha in women’s 1500 meters and swimmer Jadhav Suyash Narayan in men’s 50-meter butterfly won gold medal.
