November 16 – International Day for Tolerance

  • The International Day for Tolerance is an annual observance day declared by UNESCO in 1995 to generate public awareness of the dangers of intolerance. It is observed on 16 November.
  • TOGETHER is a global campaign that aims to reduce negative perceptions and attitudes towards refugees and migrants, and to strengthen the social contract between host countries and communities, and refugees and migrants.

November 16 – National Press Day

  • National Press Day is celebrated on November 16 to commemorate the establishment of the Press Council of India. Formed in 1966, the Press Council keeps a check on the quality of reportage provided by the Indian press.

  • Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani will hold a roadshow in Delhi in run-up to the Vibrant Gujarat 2019- biennial flagship event to be held early next year.

Aadi Mahotsav festival

  • The 15-day Aadi Mahotsav festival is beginning in the national capital Delhi. The highlights of the festival will be fashion show for tribal textiles and tribal cuisines.
  • Theme – ‘celebration of the spirit of tribal culture, craft, cuisine and commerce’.

  • European Union leaders have dismissed talk of renegotiating the draft Brexit deal and warned the UK’s political situation could make a no-deal more likely.

UNSC condemns killing of UN peacekeepers & national soldiers in DRC

  • UN Security Council has condemned the killing of at least 20 soldiers during operations against insurgents in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

UNSC unanimously agrees to lift sanctions against Eritrea after nine years

  • The United Nations Security Council has unanimously agreed to lift sanctions against Eritrea after nine years.
  • An arms embargo, asset freeze, and travel ban were imposed in 2009 amid claims that Eritrea supported al-Shabab militants in Somalia.

Cyclonic storm ‘GAJA’ weakened into a deep depression

  • The cyclonic storm ‘Gaja’ over interior Tamilnadu moved nearly westwards, weakened into a deep depression.
  • The severe cyclonic storm ‘Gaja’ over Bay of Bengal crossed Tamilnadu & Puducherry coast between Nagapattinam and Vedaranniyam.

  • World Tolerance Summit inaugurated in Dubai. Held for the first time in UAE.
  • Theme – ‘Prospering from Pluralism: Embracing Diversity through Innovation and Collaboration’.

16th Handicraft Trade Fair

  • Indian Ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri inaugurated India Pavilion at 16th Handicraft Trade Fair in Kathmandu. The main objective of the fair is to promote handicrafts and provide a common platform to local exporters, producers, foreign buyers and sellers of handicrafts.

9th Session of the India-Kyrgyz Inter-Governmental Commission

  • The 9th Session of the India-Kyrgyz Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technological Cooperation (IK-IGC) was held on 15-16 November, 2018 in New Delhi and concluded with signing of Protocol.

Traffic Separation Scheme

  • The Directorate General of Shipping has proposed the establishment of a Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) off the south-west coast of India to prevent collision incidents between merchant vessels and fishing vessels off the coast of Kerala.

Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed $ 169 Million Loan Agreement

  • Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India signed a $169 million loan as the First Tranche of a $500 million multi-tranche financing to develop climate-resilient water supply, sewerage, and drainage infrastructure in at least 10 cities in the State of Tamil Nadu.

Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed $ 300 Million Loan Agreement

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India signed in the national capital a $300 million Loan Agreement to support lending by India Infrastructure Finance Company Limited (IIFCL).

  • Pankaj Advani won his third straight IBSF billiards crown in the 150-up format, taking his overall tally of world titles to 20.

ICC Women’s World T20

  • India beat Ireland by 52 runs to enter the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s World T20.

World Junior Championship Badminton

  • Lakshya Sen progressed to the quarterfinals of the World Junior Championship Badminton in Canada.

Women’s World Boxing Championships

  • The Women’s World Boxing Championships begin in Delhi. This tenth edition of the tournament is set to be the biggest ever as more than 300 boxers from 72 countries will be taking part.
  • Mary Kom is currently tied with Katie Taylor on five gold medals and one more will make her the most successful woman boxer in history.
