March 21 – International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

  • The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March. Proclaiming the day in 1966, the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
  • 2019 Theme: Mitigating and countering rising nationalist populism and extreme supremacist ideologies

March 21 – World Poetry Day

  • World Poetry Day is celebrated on 21 March, and was declared by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1999. Its purpose is to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world.

March 21 – World Down Syndrome Day

  • World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is on March 21. On this day, people with Down syndrome and those who live and work with them throughout the world organize and participate in activities and events to raise public awareness and create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down syndrome.

March 21 – International Day of Forests

  • The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests (IDF) in 2012. The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests.
  • The theme for each International Day of Forests is chosen by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests.

  • Campus Ambassadors have been appointed to woo young voters in Assam ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. 12 Campus Ambassadors would carry out various awareness activities including street plays, poster making, VVPAT demonstration in educational institutes in the district.

  • The festival of colours – Holi is being celebrated across the country. The festival signifies the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring. 

Social Media platforms to prevent violation of Code of Ethics during polls

  • Social Media platforms and Internet Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) have adopted a Voluntary Code of Ethics for the forthcoming general elections.

New Zealand bans assault weapons

  • New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has imposed an immediate ban on assault weapons like military style semi-automatic and assault rifles under tough new gun laws following the killing of 50 people in the country’s worst mass shooting.

Integrate TB services with primary health system

  • Of the 10 million new tuberculosis(TB) cases reported globally in 2017 by the World Health Organisation, 2.74 million were from India, showing a marginal reduction from 2.79 million in 2016.
  • Government has set a highly ambitious target of “eliminating TB by 2025”, five years ahead of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target.

  • British Prime Minister Theresa May is attending the crucial European Council summit at Brussels. At the meeting, Ms May will put her case before European Union leaders for an extension to the Brexit withdrawal process till 30th of June.

  • India will play Nepal for title clash in the final of the 5th South Asian Football Federation, SAFF Women’s Championship.
