June 20 – World Refugee Day 2018

Theme – “Now more than ever, we need to stand #WithRefugees”

  • Annual event, held on the same date each year, and 2018 is the 18th year of the event, run by the United Nations Refugee Agency, to state that the world supports and stands with refugees. The event is about raising global awareness of global responsibility for refugees.

Andhra Pradesh

First State to complete automation of Crime Records Bureau

  • The Andhra Pradesh police, who lead in using crime data analytics and big data applications, have now become the first in the country to complete automation of the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB).
  • i-App cloud is now helping the police access the entire information of crimes under various IPC sections.

Governor’s rule in J&K

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has approved the imposition of Governor’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir with immediate effect.

Gujarat

World’s first International Centre for Humanitarian Forensics

  • The world’s first International Centre for Humanitarian Forensics was launched at Gandhinagar in Gujarat. It is a joint venture of the Regional delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross in India, Bhutan, Nepal and the Maldives and also Gujarat Forensic Science University.

Meghalaya

Shillong is 100th Smart City

  • As the Smart Cities Mission enters its fourth year, the Centre has finally announced the 100th and last city which will be part of the project: Shillong.
  • This announcement also sets the final end date for the Mission as June 2023, as every city gets five years to complete its projects.

Canada legalises recreational cannabis use

  • Canada has legalised the use of recreational marijuana nationwide, making it the first G7 country to do so.
  • Uruguay became the first country to legalise the sale of cannabis for recreational use in December 2013.

U.S. pulls out of United Nations Human Rights Council

  • The United States announced that it was leaving the United Nations Human Rights Council.

World’s first known natural manta ray nursery

  • Scientists have discovered the world’s first known natural manta ray nursery, located in the Gulf of Mexico which could allow them to observe the juvenile marine creatures in their habitat and learn more about them.

Toothpaste contribute to antibiotic resistance

  • A common ingredient Triclosan, found in toothpastes and hand washes could be contributing to the rise of antibiotic resistant bacteria, a study has found.

RBI tightens remittance norms

  • The RBI has tightened norms for Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) by making quoting of permanent account number (PAN) mandatory even for transactions below USD 25,000.

Hyundai Motor, Audi signed an agreement for fuel cell technology

  • Hyundai Motor Group signed an agreement with Audi AG to jointly develop electronics vehicles powered by fuel cell. Under the multi-year agreement signed they will share components, supply chains and patent licensing.

Gensol to make India ‘back-end hub’ for solar plant monitoring

  • Ahmedabad-based Gensol Group, which specialises in design, engineering, operation and maintenance and advisory services for solar projects, is planning to make India a global back-end hub for engineering and remote monitoring of solar plants

Dam Safety Bill, 2018

  • The Union Cabinet in its meeting chaired by the Prime Minister Modi approved the proposal for introduction of Dam Safety Bill, 2018 in the Parliament. The objective of this Bill is to help develop uniform, countrywide procedures for ensuring the safety of dams.

Vice President to inaugurate conference on agriculture

  • Agriculture experts and economists will deliberate upon an agricultural trade policy and transfer of technology from labs to land at a conference in Pune will be inaugurated by Vice President Venkaiah Naidu.

Airbridge for Mansarovar Yatra

  • Indian Air Force would create an airbridge between Pithoragarh and Gunji, in an effort to airlift 1080 registered passengers to Gunji to enable them to continue their journey for the coveted annual Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

  • Haryana has become the first state in the country to give star ranking to village panchayats on the basis of  seven  social parameters and as many as  1,120 villages of Haryana has achieved star ranking under “7-Star Gram Panchayat Rainbow Scheme”
