April 28 – World Day for Safety and Health at Work

2018 Theme – “Occupational Safety Health (OSH) vulnerability of young workers”.

  • The annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28 April promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally.
  • It is an awareness-raising campaign intended to focus international attention on the magnitude of the problem and on how promoting and creating a safety and health of young workers and end child labour.

Adopt a Heritage scheme – Tourism Ministry

  • Adopt a Heritage Scheme, the Ministry of Tourism has clarified that the “Adopt a Heritage: Apni Dharohar, Apni Pehchaan”, is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Culture and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and State/UTs  Governments.
  • The Project aims to develop synergy among all partners to effectively promote “responsible tourism”.
  • The Dalmia Bharat Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Union Tourism Ministry to take up Red Fort in Delhi and Gandikota Fort in Andhra Pradesh under the ‘Adopt a Heritage’ project.

Shirui Lily Festival 2018

  • The 2nd edition of Shirui Lily Festival 2018 has recently concluded at Ukhrul district in Manipur on April 28, 2018.
  • The festival is sponsored by the Department of Tourism, Government of Manipur to spread awareness about conservation of the endangered Shirui Lily and promote the district of Ukhrul as a tourist destination in Manipur.

Longest serving chief minister

  • On April 29, Pawan Chamling has created history by becoming the longest serving chief minister in India.
  • He surpassed the record of former communist ruler of West Bengal, Late Jyoti Basu.
  • Chamling became the chief minister of Sikkim on 12th December 1994.

  • On 29thApril 2018, Nirmal Singh resigned as Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and Kavinder Gupta (Gandhinagar MLA) took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

  • An India-Nepal Inter Government Committee (IGC) on Trade, Transit and Cooperation to Control Unauthorised Trade, led by Commerce Secretaries of the two Governments, is functioning under the India-Nepal Treaty of Trade and India-Nepal Treaty of Transit.
  • It provides a platform for discussing and reviewing bilateral trade and transit related issues.

 Multi-nation counter-terrorism exercise Peace Mission

  • The multi-nation counter-terrorism exercise “Peace Mission” will be held at the Ural mountains of Russia in September 2018, which will take place under the framework of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Saudi Aramco appoints first woman to board of directors

  • Lynn Laverty Elsenhans 60, is the former head of US oil company Sunoco Inc. had been appointed to Saudi national oil giant Aramco board of directors, the first woman in the firm’s history.

New plants from Western Ghats

  • Apart from the discoveries of the world’s smallest land fern and two shrubs of the rattlepod family reported, six species including two balsams, two shrubs belonging to the mint family (Lamiaceae), a herb of the coffee family (Rubiaceae) and 10-cm-tall Sonerila (a rock-loving wild herb), a flowering plant commonly found in the tropics, have been discovered.

Novel technique to detect paraffin oil contamination in coconut oil

  • Using a novel approach, researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have for the first time been able to use laser-assisted paper spray ionisation mass spectrometry to analyse various saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons directly from solutions.
  • IIT Madras team found paraffin oil contamination was as high as 10%

World Cup Satellite Fencing Championship

  • On 28thApril 2018, India’s CA Bhavani Devi won a silver medal in the sabre event of the Tournoi World Cup Satellite Fencing Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Belgrade International Boxing

  • Sumit Sangwan (91kg), Himanshu Sharma (49kg) and Nikhat Zareen (51kg) were among the three gold-medallists in India’s stupendous campaign at the 56th Belgrade International Boxing Tournament in Serbia.
  • India ended the tournament with three gold, five silver and five bronze medals in all.

Prajnesh wins maiden singles title on Challenger circuit

  • Prajnesh Gunneswaran on Sunday clinched his first ever singles title on the ATP(The Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger circuit when he downed Egypt’s Mohammed Safwat in the final of the Kunming Open in Anning.
