  • Rythu Bandhu (investment support scheme for agriculture) will benefit more than 58 lakh farmers in the State covering about 1.42 crore acres.

AFSPA

  • Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA)gives armed forces the power to maintain public order in “disturbed areas”
  • Centre has announced that it revoked the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from Meghalaya from April 1, 2018
  • It is effective in the whole of Nagaland, Assam, Manipur (excluding seven assembly constituencies of Imphal) and parts of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Tripura withdrew the AFSPA in 2015. Jammu and Kashmir too has a similar Act.

Minorities panel to seek Constitutional status

  • In its present form, NCM has powers to summon officials, including chief secretaries and director generals of police, but has to rely on departments concerned for action against officials.

100% renewable energy

  • Diu Smart City has become the first city in India that runs on 100% renewable energy during daytime setting a new benchmark for other cities to become clean and green.

  • This was the first time Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong visited a Hindu consecration ceremony since he assumed office in 2004.

Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)

  • Headquartered in Beijing, was founded in 2001.
  • Comprising China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, India and Pakistan.
  • The SCO aims at military cooperation between the member states and involves intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism operations in Central Asia and joint work against cyber terrorism.

ECONOMY

  • India retained the top position as recipient of remittances with its diaspora sending about USD 69 billion the World Bank said today
  • India continued to top in terms of receiving remittance, and was followed by China (USD 64 billion), the Philippines (USD 33 billion), Mexico (USD 31 billion), Nigeria (USD 22 billion), and Egypt (USD 20 billion).

International SME Convention

  • Delegates from 37 countries are participating in the first ever International SME (Small, Medium Enterprises) Convention being held in New Delhi from 22nd to 24th April 2018
  • During the 2 days’ Convention a Khadi fashion show called “Transcending Boundaries” will be held.

SCIENCE

Palm-sized sensor

  • Scientists from Austria developed an inexpensive light and portable sensor that can detect a specific chemical emitted by breath or skin: acetone, ammonia or isoprene and could be used to rescue people trapped in rubble after an earthquake or bombing.

SPORTS

English PFA Player of the Year award

  • Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was named Player of the Year by England’s Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) becoming the first Egyptian to receive the award.
