CBSE Withdraws “Shockingly Repressive Question”

In the face of widespread outcry, the CBSE has decided to remove contentious questions from the class 10 English test in order to grant full marks. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) voted on Monday (December 13, 2021) to remove questions based on comprehension passages from the class 10 English test, noting anger about gender bias. The board published circular informing students that they will receive full marks.

A comprehension paragraph was included in the question paper, including lines such as “emancipation of women damaged the parent’s control over the children” and “a mother could only obtain obedience over the younger ones by adopting her husband’s method,” among others.

“A passage in one set of the English language and Literature paper of CBSE Class X first term examination held on December 11, 2021, is not in accordance with the guidelines of the board with regard to the setting of question papers,” the CBSE said.

“The topic was submitted to a committee of subject experts based on comments from stakeholders. It was decided to eliminate passage no. 1 and its related questions from the question paper series JSK/1, based on their advice” According to the CBSE.

It should be noted that the question paper included a comprehension passage with statements such as “emancipation of women weakened the parent’s power over the children” and “a mother could only obtain obedience over the younger ones by adopting her husband’s method,” among others.

Several passages from the passage went viral on social media, with people criticising the board for promoting “misogynistic” and “regressive” viewpoints, with the hashtag “CBSE degrades women” trending on Twitter.

Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, all members of the Congress, had opposed to the question paper.

The CBSE class 12 sociology paper earlier this month asked students to name the political party that was responsible for the “anti-Muslim riots in Gujarat in 2002,” a question the board later deemed “inappropriate” and in violation of its norms.
