Board of Control for Cricket in India

  • The board was formed in December 1928 as a society, registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act. It is a consortium of state cricket associations and the state associations select their representatives who in turn elect the BCCI officials.

  • The BCCI logo is derived from the emblem of the Order of the Star of India, the British Raj emblem during the colonial period.

History

  • In 1912, an all-India cricket team visited England for the first time, sponsored and captained by the Maharaja of Patiala.
  • In 1926, two representatives of the Calcutta Cricket Club travelled to London to attend meetings of the Imperial Cricket Conference, the predecessor to the current International Cricket Council.
  • In December 1928, the BCCI was registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act with six associations affiliated to it. R E Grant Govan was elected as its first president and Anthony de Mello as secretary

Committee of Administrators (CoA)

  • The Supreme Court on 30 January 2017 nominated a four-member panel Committee of Administrators (Vinod Rai, Ramachandra Guha, Vikaram Limaye and Diana Edulji) to look after the administration of the BCCI in order to implement lodha committee reforms.
  • Vinod Rai, ex-CAG of India heads the four members panel to look after the administrative duties of the board until the fresh elections are called.

Domestic cricket

  • The BCCI is India’s richest sporting body and the richest cricket board in the world.

The BCCI organises the following domestic cricket competitions:

  1. BCCI Corporate Trophy
  2. Ranji Trophy
  3. NKP Salve Challenger Trophy
  4. Duleep Trophy
  5. Vijay Hazare Trophy
  6. Deodhar Trophy
  7. Indian Premier League
  8. Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
  9. Irani Cup

Election and term of office bearers

  • The following Office Bearers of the BCCI shall be elected by the Full Members of the BCCI from amongst their representatives at an Annual General Meeting:
  1. The President
  2. The Vice-President
  3. The Secretary
  4. The Joint Secretary
  5. The Treasurer

A person shall be disqualified from being an Office Bearer if he or she:

  • is not a citizen of India;
  • has attained the age of 70 years;
  • is declared to be insolvent, or of unsound mind;
  • is a Minister or Government Servant;
  • holds any office or post in a sports or athletic association or federation apart from cricket;
  • has been an Office Bearer of the BCCI for a period of 9 years or an office bearer of any Member for a period of 9 years; or
  • has been charged by a Court of law for having committed any criminal offence.

Relations with ICC

  • In 2009, the ICC and BCCI were in disagreement over the WADA, “Whereabouts clause”.BCCI was also against the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) proposed by the ICC.
  • The BCCI is regarded as cricket’s big economic players.

Finances

  • BCCI does not depend on the Government of India for its finances.
  • The global media rights for IPL is awarded to STAR india for ₹16347.5 crore from 2018 to 2022.
