AICTE Approves 142 New Technical Institutes Across the Country – Ban on New Engineering Institutes!!! The All India Council for Technical Education is a national-level council for technical education under the Department of Higher Education. This AICTE has approved 142 new technical institutes across the country for this academic year. This is expected to increase the number of admissions for engineering, management and MCA courses.

Regarding this, AICTE President Anil Sahasrapude said that only new engineering institutes have been banned. Otherwise, hotel administration, management and applied arts institutions will operate as usual. Also, AICTE has given approval to government-owned institutions, institutions with revenue exceeding Rs.5,000 crore, educational trusts with more than 25 years of experience in running educational institutions wishing to start new schemes. According to the information provided earlier by AICTE, 172 applications have been received from new institutes this year. Out of which 142 colleges have been given permission to start new courses.

These 142 colleges span various disciplines including engineering, architecture, hotel management and management programs. Accordingly 52 engineering colleges and 80 new management institutes have been sanctioned. Earlier in 2020, AICTE had decided to extend the moratorium on new engineering institutes till 2024 due to 45% vacancies in engineering colleges across the country. It is reported that after this ban, the number of seats for engineering courses this year has increased to 23,93,820.
