Birth Anniversary of Wilhelm Rontgen
- Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was born on 27 March 1845.
- He was a German mechanical engineer and physicist.
- On 8 November 1895, he produced and detected electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength range known as X-rays or Röntgen rays.
Honours and awards
- Rumford Medal (1896)
- Matteucci Medal (1896)
- Elliott Cresson Medal (1897)
- He won the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
- In 1907 he became a foreign member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
- In November 2004 International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry(IUPAC) named element number 111 roentgenium (Rg) in his honour. IUPAP adopted the name in November 2011.
Death
- Röntgen died on 10 February 1923 from carcinoma of the intestine in Munich, Germany, aged 77.
Yuri Gagarin Memorial Day
- Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was born on 9 March 1934.
- He was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut.
- He was the first human to journey into outer space when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961.
Honours and awards
- Gagarin became an international celebrity and was awarded many medals and titles, including Hero of the Soviet Union, the nation’s highest honour.
- Gold medal and diploma “Man in Space”, the Italian Association of Space.
- Gold Medal “For outstanding difference” and the Royal Aero Club Diploma, Sweden.
- Gold Medal Award “for courage” of the Fund Matstsotti (Italy), 2007.
- The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale awards the Yuri A. Gagarin Gold Medal in his honor.
Death
- Gagarin died on 27 March 1968 when the MiG-15 training jet he was piloting crashed.
