NITI Aayog’s Aspirational District Ranking released: Chandauli of UP tops

The NITI Aayog released the ranking of Aspirational Districts of the country for the month of December 2019. The ranking is released every month. The Chandauli district of UP topped the list followed by Bolangir of Odisha, YSR (AP) in second and third positions respectively. Sahibanj of Jhatkhan and Hailakandi of Assam were placed in fourth and fifth places. The rankings were done for 112 aspirational districts. The districts were selected from six developmental areas in December 2019.

The main objective of the programme is to transform the districts that have been pockets of under-development. These cities show relatively lesser progress. Also, the ranking helps in competitive Federalism and hence hastens overall development.

44th International Kolkata Book Fair 2020 (IKBF) begins in Kolkata, West Bengal with Russia as the theme country

The 44th edition of Kolkata Book Fair 2020 (IKBF) has commenced at Central Park Mela Ground in SaltLake, Kolkata , West Bengal with Russia as a “Focal Theme Country”. Tyto, a category of bird species consisting of barn owls, grass owls and masked owls was selected as the official Mascot of the Book Fair for the 1st time.

On this occasion, 4 books have been translated from Russian to Bengali.It includes, Bigyapone Mele na, Frosia Karovina, Ek theke dosh Prem & Rangberong er Tushar.

European Parliament approves UK withdrawal agreement

The European Parliament approved Britain’s departure terms from the EU. The vote was 621 to 49 in favour of the Brexit deal that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson negotiated with the other 27 EU leasders.

Britain is the first country to leave the EU with this its members reduced to 27. The EU Parliament backed Britain’s departure in the wake of the country’s vote to leave in a referendum in june 2016.

TII Survey: Assam tops in best budgetary practices followed by Andhra Pradesh

According to the survey “Transparency in Budgetary Process Report 2.0”. conducted by Transparency International’s India(TII), Assam tops in the ranking of best practices followed by states in budget formulation with a score of 70. Assam is the only state out of 29 states and 2 UTs (Union Territories) to publish a citizen’s budget in the public domain and also to conduct budget awareness campaign across 17 districts.

This survey is based on four parameters which include public disclosure, budgetary process, post budget fiscal management and efforts to make budget more transparent and citizen friendly.

Surajkund Mela 2020 : The Largest Crafts Fair In The World

President Ram Nath Kovind will inaugurate the 34th Surajkund International Crafts Fair on February 1, 2020, in Faridabad, Haryana. For the 34th Surajkund International Crafts Mela-2020, the partner country of the fair is Uzbekistan. The state of Himachal Pradesh has been chosen to be the Theme State.

The 16th Mumbai International Film Festival-2020 for Documentary, Short Fiction and Animation films), inaugurated at Nehru Centre Auditorium, Worli, Mumbai. The oldest and largest film festival for non-feature films in South Asia, which began in 1990 is organized by the Films Division, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India.

French honors for theatre artiste Sanjana Kapoor

Famous theatre artist Sanjana Kapoor conferred with the Franch honour of Chevalier dans lOrdre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) for her outstanding contribution to the field of theatre. She was felicitated by Franck Riester, the French Ministter of Culture.She is a co-founder of ‘Junoon’, an organization that works towards increasing the reach of theatre.

L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres is a French government distinction instituted in 1957 by the Ministry of Culture, and is conferred, regardless of nationality, on persons who have distinguished themselves by their creativity in the fields of art or literature, or for their contribution to promoting art and literature in France and throughout the world.

Dr Partap Chauhan conferred with Ayurveda Ratan Award in Brussels

Dr. Partap Chauhan, the pioneer of Ayurvedic Telemedicine, has Conferred with Prestigious Ayurveda Ratan Award 2020 in Brussels, Belgium during Ayurveda Day Celebratio at the European Parliament.

The All-Party Parliament Group on Traditional Medicines organized a meeting at in Brussels, Belgium with the aim of formulating a roadmap to legalize Ayurveda in Europe and to integrate it with their healthcare systems. On November 21, 2018, Ayurveda Day was 1st celebrated at the European Parliament .

Indian environmental economist Pavan Sukhdev wins 2020 Tyler Prize

Renowned Indian environmental economist and UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Goodwill Ambassador Pavan Sukhdev has won the 2020 Tyler Prize, regarded as the “Nobel Prize for the Environment” for his groundbreaking “green economy” work.

Also, conservationbiologist Gretchen C.Daily has also won the Tyler Prize 2020. The duo will receive the award at a private ceremony on May 1 in New York.

Gita Sabharwal of India appointed UN Resident Coordinator in Thailand

Gita Sabharwal of India was appointed as the UN(United Nations) Resident Coordinator (RC) of Thailand by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. She is recently served in UN, Sri lanka as the Peacebuilding and Development Adviser for 7 years.

The UN Resident Coordinator is the highest ranking representative of the UN development system at country level and representatives of UN Secretary-General.

India’s Esow Alben bags gold in men’s Keirin individual event of Six Day Berlin Tournament

In Cycling, India’s Esow Alben has bagged a gold in the men’s Keirin individual event of the Six Day Berlin Tournament. The 18-year-old finished on top of the podium, earning 20 classification points.

Czech Republic’s Tomas Babek, who won a silver in the 2017 World Championship, came in second while Maximilian Lev of Germany took home the bronze.

Former Kerala Minister M. Kamalam passed away

Former Kerala Minister & Senior Congress leader M.kamalam passed away at the age of 93 in kozhikode, Kerala due to age-related ailments. She was born on August 14,1926. She started her political career as the Councillor in Kozhikode Corporation.

Kamalam was elected to the state assembly twice from Kalpetta, kerala in 1980 &1982 and also served as Cooperation Minister in the K Karunakaran cabinet from 1982-1987.

In India, World Leprosy Day is observed on Jan 30 every year to commemorate the death of Mahatma Gandhi who was assassinated on this day in 1948. World Leprosy Day Theme is “Leprosy isn’t what you think”.

World Leprosy Day is observed internationally every year on the last Sunday of January to increase public awareness of the Leprosy.

Every year January 30 is observed as Mahatma Gandhi’s Martyrdom day. This year India is observing the 72nd death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Nathuram Godse killed Mahatma Gandhi on the evening of January 30, 1948.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is known for his thoughts and principles during his lifetime. Union Minister Smriti Irani tweeted on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary that she salutes to all those people who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country. She also said that the bravery of martyrs will be remembered.
